Getting into the Good Samaritan spirit in western Manitoba
The Manitoba/Northwestern Ontario Good Sam organization connects seven chapters that get a kick out of RV camping. These Good Sam groups bring together friendly RVers who not only have fun together, they look out for one other, both on the highway and in the campground. In the Good Samaritan spirit, they also look out for folks in their communities.
Take the Wheat City Sams, for example. With home addresses from Melita to Fork River in western Manitoba, chapter members consider each other as extended family. When the weather’s good, they round up their RVs at monthly campouts to play outdoor games, roast hotdogs and swap campfire stories. But they also believe in RVing with a purpose.
Case in point: Last year the chapter hosted a raffle to raise money for Murray House, a cancer-treatment residence in Brandon that’s funded solely by public donations. Thanks to contributions from the Wheat City Sams and other generous donors, Murray House opens its doors to cancer patients and their families this summer in Manitoba’s second largest city.
The Wheat City Sams chapter is a thriving group that gained four new member families last year and attended five Samborees in Canada and the United States. Fellow RVers are always welcome to tag along, and there’s no pressure to join the chapter, though that tends to be what happens.
