When you first arrive in New Brunswick, you might feel a sense of awe and wonder at the spectacle that nature has created. Panoramic ocean views, majestic rock formations, and sprawling green plains are only some of the elements that nature has used to create this masterpiece. The Bay of Fundy is a fascinating place to check out at low tide, when the ocean floor is exposed, and you can get a glimpse of the “flowerpot rocks,” so named because of the shape created by the endless ebb and flow of 100 billons tons of seawater. But this bay is only one of an incredible number of things to see and do while New Brunswick camping.
Starting this one tank trip off in Woodstock, which has the distinction of being New Brunswick’s first town, you’ll find a community rich with charm and proud of its history. There are several Victorian homes available for touring, and both the Meduxnekeag and St. John’s Rivers join near downtown Woodstock. Rent a paddle boat or kayak and take a cruise along the water’s edge, or enjoy the view from any of the waterside eateries that serve some of the finest French food in Canada.
Getting out on the road, drive southeast on Provincial Route 2 for a little more than 20 miles, which brings you into Hawkshaw. This area brings the quietness of a remote getaway, while remaining close to any conveniences you might require. It’s a great place to set up camp and just enjoy being in nature, and you’ll have no trouble finding somewhere to hook up the rig and set up housekeeping for as long as you like. Do we need to mention how spectacular the views are? This is New Brunswick camping, after all…
The town of Mactaquac is a quick 17-mile drive east on the PR-2, and is quite near the province’s capital city of Fredericton. Tour the town’s fascinating living history museum dedicated to depicting 19th century life, but then leap to the 20th century with a day of enough shopping and dining experiences to satisfy any taste.
Another 10 miles east on the PR-2 takes you to your last one tank trip stop, Oromocto, a small and beautiful community with a population of around 9,000. This town features a wide range of outdoor activities, from hiking and mountain biking trails, to fishing and camping. It’s one of Canada’s undiscovered jewels, so treat yourself and pay it a visit before everyone gets in on the act!
