Kick Up Your Heels and Celebrate the Old Mining History!
Passing through to Los Angeles on the I-15, or heading toward Las Vegas, you’re sure to want to stop off at Calico Ghost Town on the long holiday weekend, October 8-10. The old mining town will come to life celebrating its history during Calico Days.
For those of you who love the history of the Old West, Calico was once the site of the largest silver strike in California history. Yes, sir! Finding the mother lode in its hills put Calico on the map back in the 1880’s. To celebrate this time, Calico Days is all about remembering its hey-day.
There’s a camping special of $100 for the entire weekend. This includes admission to the park and events for up to six persons per unit. Reservations may be booked online at www.sbcountyparks.com. Camping prices for the weekend include admission to the events for up to 6 people.
And what will you see at the festival? A full-blown parade of men and women dressed in period outfits – bustles, petticoats, parasols, long coats, miner’s gear and all – either walking or riding on horseback. There is a Miner’s Triathlon where sturdy souls try to pick up boulders and move them, do a little muck-raking, and some arm wrestling, too! And there’s the favorite burro race whereby people try to steer their burro from the top of the hill down to the claims office, just like they did in the “good old days.”
Kids get into the act as well with their own triathlon. There are mini-carriage rides for the youngsters as well as a petting zoo and lots of contests and games.
And throughout the weekend the town is filled with live music performances featuring Country-Western and Bluegrass sounds. On Sunday, October 10th at 1:30 p.m. the featured performers, Stealing Angels will appear. This group has a sound similar to The Dixie Chicks – but with even better blood lines. The lead singer, Talya Lynn, is the granddaughter of Queen of Country’s Loretta Lynn; Jennifer Wayne is the granddaughter of legendary actor John Wayne; and Carolyn Cuthbert is a descendent of Daniel Boone.
Make plans to spend a weekend at Calico Ghost Town October 8-10. Calico features 265 spaces for camping including full, partial or no hook up. The town also has fourteen shops and three restaurants.
Check out the website for the Ghost town for more info about this event.
