Walnut Hills, VA - city street view

Downtown Staunton VA

After more than eight years as part of the KOA system, the Walnut Hills Campground and RV Park has become a Good Sam affiliate instead. So if you’re the kind of camper for whom Good Sam parks are a first choice—or one for whom KOAs are not—come check us out. We’re located in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley, close to hiking in George Washington National Forest and Shenandoah National Park, to the restaurants and antique shops of Staunton, and to the breweries and wineries that dot this part of the state. We’re also well situated to be your home base for exploring the Blackfriars Shakespeare Playhouse in Staunton, Crabtree Falls in Nelson County, the Blue Ridge Parkway and lots of other attractions.  See Staunton Visitor Center.

Peaceful relaxation in a country setting.

Walnut Hills is spread out, with 150 sites distributed over 43 acres and around beautiful Kerplonken Lake. Campers who enjoy fishing may prefer to back into a generous lakeside site, where they can try their luck at catching one of our large-mouth bass (no fishing license needed). Others may opt for a hill-top site overlooking the park and surrounding countryside, including several full-hook-up pull-through patio sites perfect for kicking back and enjoying a quiet weekend.

Also available are large, water-electric pull-throughs in the meadow for people who are just passing through, as well as smaller sites nestled in a grove of walnut trees for pop-ups and small trailers, and even an overlook site with stellar views of the entire park.

And if RV camping isn’t your thing, Walnut Hills is home to nine deluxe cabins with kitchens and bathrooms, four rustic cabins for campers who want to rough it, and a handful of primitive tent sites perfect for families just starting their adventures in camping. Have a dog or two? Bring them along, too: most of our cabins are pet-friendly, and we have a large fenced-in yard for your dogs to run free.

Fun on the park.

Just because Walnut Hills is a great place to unwind doesn’t mean we don’t have a wealth of fun activities on tap as well. Last year, we installed a new GaGa Ball pit at the playground, as well as a par-3 9-hole disc-golf course. Terrainables and wagon rides haul both kids and adults around the park, a playground, volleyball, horseshoes and cornhole sets are available. There’s even an old-fashioned pinball arcade, and the pool is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day.  See more attractions at Walnut Hills.

During peak season (May to the end of October), the staff is hard at work running theme weekends that range from old stand-bys like Christmas in July and Halloween extravaganzas to more experimental and low-key weekends like Oktoberfest, a summer carnival, and an early August luau. Other activities include crafts and games for kids, beer tastings for the grown-ups, and candy bar bingo and live music for the whole family.  See more events at Walnut Hills.

We’re a family-owned campground, so we understand family fun. Come see for yourself, by making a reservation by phone or online.
