Iowa’s Best Burger Café

Kellogg, Iowa, is the quintessential Midwest town. It’s steeped in tradition with 480 residents and it’s home to the best burger café in Iowa. The store started as a bus station when Interstate 80 was first constructed through Iowa. Besides snacks, beverages, basic car repair and restrooms, there wasn’t much to it in the 1960s.

The café added in the 1980s was also basic except for its hamburger. Over and over again, customers would comment that Iowa’s best burger was served here, so the name soon changed to Iowa’s Best Burger Café. The store has served more than 2.6 million sandwiches since opening in 1989.

Owner Scott Keenan says “We put a meal out about every 40 seconds”.

“It’s not just about hamburgers though. “One relatively unnoticed menu item is, in my opinion, the best item we offer,” Keenan said. “It’s a quarter-pound charbroiled pork tenderloin with cheese and our own BBQ sauce, served on a split-top bun, accompanied by a side of our homemade coleslaw.”

Celery seeds are added to the coleslaw, and Keenan believes that its those small details that set the food apart from competitors. For desert, choose from 16 flavors of ice cream.
