I have been asked to join the bloggers posting at “A Woman’s View.” I’m excited about the opportunity to have conversations on topics that relate to women and RVing. I made a short video to watch and eagerly await your suggestions for topics and comments.
In the video, I mention that Alice and I led a workshop at a recent RV rally on RVing from the woman’s perspective. In our Roundtable Discussion, women made several suggestions for living with a mate 24/7. Here are the first five:
- Tell your partner, “I need alone time.” It is not your responsibility if his feelings are hurt.
- I need a “Kay” day (after Kay Peterson’s “Living in a Sardine Can” talks). Good, nonthreatening signal that you need alone time.
- Pack your partner a lunch. The number of sandwiches indicates how long he should be gone!
- Make sure he knows he needs to find a way to entertain himself at times.
- Find women to talk to at RV rallies or in an RV park. Put up a note at an RV park inviting women to join you in the club house or in front of your rig at a certain time. In one RV group I belong to, we usually have one or more women’s group meetings.

Love your blog. I am a solo rv’r. Dh and I have had rvs since the 70’s. When he passed away i had to make the choice to sell it or keep it. Obviously I kept it. Went to rv driving school and still continue to learn. This is my 2nd winter on the road.still have a house, and still looking for warm weather even in the south.
I have much more to learn but have found all I have to do is ask and help is there. Rv’s are the greatest people in the world and will come to your assistance.
Suggestions: don’t go on the road without Road Service(Coach Net, Good Sam, etc) Towing is very expensive. Join rv organizations. There are two that I personnally can speak of: Escapees and the LOWS (Loners on wheels) They are both like extended family and you will find them everywhere. Check out their websites. There are alot of single women on the road, we just need to connect.

I am so glad I found this blog–and am glad to be planning on being a full-time RVer in the next 4 yrs. I have to get my son graduated from high school & this economy leveled out before we can sell & go. We currently have a travel trailer that we use about 2 weekends a month in the spring, summer, & fall. And ladies-much ado about nothing on the backing thing–NomadsRFabulous is right–PRACTICE. I can put ours on a postage stamp. LOL However, my husband couldn’t put in on a lot the size of an aircraft carrier! And we still get the predjudiced comments-“can ur husband back it into this spot?” Augh! Education to the Masses!! I would love to hear from any traveling nurses out there–as I will be having to continue to work while we travel. My biggest concern is finding work, and what kind of temporary assignments that I will be able to get. There are a lot of good points in this blog – a little practise backing up is all you need. My problem is the men that think they can do it better and then get me stuck or overheated….it’s cold here too so i would like to go south for sure next winter – it’s really more fun alone and even more if there is another rig with you to spend the evening chatting.
Have confidence in yourself – have a cell phone and CB radio for support.

Jaimie: I look forward to your blogs. I bought my 5th wheel several years ago in anticipation of traveling with my guy. Then the guy was gone and I was left with my camper. SO you either sell it OR you drive it. I opted for the second. I camp almost every weekend and for a week or so with local friends and myself. I am so good at backing up now I dare anyone to find a place I can’t go! I am ready to leave at anytime but would love to hear about what everybody is doing about things such as insurance. Wonder if Obama can help us out here? Up here in ND we can’t get out early like all you other folks and I am never able to attend the spring rallys and such. My dream would be to travel all over the south and warm up these cold bones. Being alone is a challenge but I think I can do it. I have your books and they are an inspiration. This is a great idea. Being a woman on the road is something you just don’t hear much about.
But, I don’t like the video format. My experience with downloading videos off the internet has always been slow. It takes 15 minutes to download them and a minute or two to watch them. If you want to use videos, please give us an option to read the message without downloading the video. More often than not, I get tired of waiting and delete the download before it is finished.

Hi and thank you for starting a blog for women on the road. I have been on the road since 1998. My travels originated in the San Francisco Bay Area. Travel in this country in an RV is FANTASTIC. Being alone in something new for me and it is FABULOUS. Every moment is a new adventure. Common sense is really the first ingredient required for women to solo it out here. I truly believe Women can RV solo without much difficulty, all you need to have is the desire and the want to learn. With that you can go a long ways in the RV lifestyle. If you do not know how to back up your RV just go to a very large parking lot put out some bright orange road cones and start to practice. You will accompish all necessary requirements if you will allow yourself to do so. Come on Ladies, men can do these tasks so we certainly know with a little practice we can do it. Get access to the internet where ever you go and keep in touch. This will provide you with fairs, festivals, local events, farmers markets for quality fresh local food, new groups for social networking such as Meetup.com FANTASTIC social networking all over the country, RV info, RV help, RV chat, RV rallies and on and on. The internet in your RV is the required access to the world. Gas buddy is fantastic for gas prices, online RV parts from American RV Company the cheapest out there for the big expensive items, such as water heaters, furnances, converters FANTASTIC customer service. Check out google maps, mapquest for ease of directions to your locations. There are many RV seminars across the country that women can attend and LEARN. RVing Women is located in Apache Junction Arizona these are women who network with women for travel. Solo women should check it out if you want travel partners with their own rigs. Good luck to all and go out there and give it a try.
PS I also wanted to make a comment regarding the discrimination that took place in Naples, FL. This practice goes on all across the country. It is not right. I was discriminated against in a campground in Myrtle Beach SC. When locations are looking for peoples to work (Workampers) in their facility it seems they always thinks there needs to be a man involved in the couple so he can do the outside duties. COME ON in this day and age there are many qualified women in the fields that use to be reserved for “the men.” So please, let us stop the discrimination based on the model of America in the 1950’s, Leave It To Beaver mentality. This is the new age, if a person is qualified, gender should be left at the curb. YAHOO:)

Excellent subject. I’ll bet more men watch then women do however… When it comes to understanding the other halfs’ needs on the road.. most guys don’t have a clue untill the little lady says something… difficulties and management of personalities has always been of question. A second issue consering women is being taken advantage of due to stereotypes…. viewing women as being helpless.

Excellent! Women do have different needs, expectations, fears, bravery, skills than the guys…whether we are RVing solo or paired, its good to talk and discuss.
I admit to missing easy access to my girlfriends on the road, while still thoroughly enjoying one-on-one time with my spouse. When we go full time in a year or two, will I feel really isolated?

How about discriminatory practices. Kountry Kampinn in Naples FL threw single female out based on what husband allegedly did last year. Many RVers protested action to no avail.

Every time I open your email or blog, a form pops up in my face. I have been signed up for a long time. When I fill it out to try to stop it, I am told that I am already signed up. The first 15-20 times it was a nuisance, but now it is getting downright irritating. What do I need to do to stop this from happening? If there is no way to stop it, please remove me from the mailing list.

Jaimie, I also am a newbie, but I am a solo with no mate. I have so many fears that mostly come from lack of knowledge on what to do if ‘whatever’ happens, being it a blowout or loss of power. “Now I got this thing in here and I don’t know how to back it up properly, what do I do?” These are the types of things that I worry about. I am not on the road full time, yet. So far have just taken week trips with my grandson, but the time is getting closer when I will want to sell this place and go. All your advise and help on this site is needed. Thanks.

At last another woman on the road alone. Everyone can not believe that I do that and have been for the last 15 or so years. I found out that I am actually safer by myself since another passenger turned on all outlets on the gas stove and forgot to mention that she had tried to use it and then left it. I like it better by myself since there is so much to think about and I can turn the radio on for company. But I would like to have other women to travel with if they have their own rigs and hopefully are musicians like me. I go to Bluefrass festivals and the like and can’t wait to get on the road again this year. Thanks for your blog – it gives me encouragement to get out there again.

I think this is great that you are going to be doing this. I am a newbie and have a lot to learn and | know this would help me adjust to this life style. We have a lot of books about RVing but we women do look at things different than men do. Thanks
