Outdoor Adventures!

Just outside of New Orleans, Houma is known as Louisiana’s Bayou Country. With over 2500 square miles of slow moving bayous and vast swamps to explore, Houma is your place to explore the unique environment of southern Louisiana and we have a few ideas of how to do it below.

Geocaching:

Grab your cell phone, hiking boots and sense of adventure for this unique way to explore Louisiana’s Bayou Country. Geocaching is a high tech treasure hunting game that uses GPS enabled devises to navigate participants to a series of hidden containers. Houma is home to Louisiana’s only GeoTour, a series of geocaches hidden at one-of-a-kind attractions, and you can find them all on this Bayou Country adventure.
Fishing:

With access to some of the most diverse and densely populated fishing locales, Houma has an experience for every angler. For the first time fisherman or for a leisurely day of casting, try fishing our bayous or lakes. To up the adventure factor, travel south the coastal wetlands and try kayak fishing for huge redfish. If you truly want a fish story, head to the southernmost point of the Houma area and launch into the Gulf of Mexico. Just off of our coast, the Gulf waters get very deep, very quickly, allowing for you to have an excellent day catching big game fish such as tuna, amber jack and red snapper.

See the Swamp

Hope aboard with a Cajun captain and explore the Louisiana swamps. Whether it’s on a slow moving pontoon boat or a high speed air boat, the Houma area can bring you deep into the heart of cypress trees and Spanish moss. Here you will find beautiful birds, such as the great blue heron, gorgeous flowers and, of course, the beasts of the bayou – alligators.
Nature and Wildlife Preserves:

The Houma area is home to nationally recognized and preserved lands that you will have to see to believe. For example, drive south of the city of Houma and you are in the Barataria Terrebonne National Estuary. This unique ecosystem where salt water from the Gulf of Mexico reaches inland fresh water is considered one of the most expansive and productive estuaries in the world. It is the perfect place to view migratory birds in the spring and fall. For a walk on the wild side, visit the Mandalay National Wildlife Refuge, a protected habitat for the bald eagle and American alligator.
