Because sometimes a leisurely stroll through ancient seabeds, eroding plateaus and sedimentation is just what your overworked, overtimulated soul needs. Or maybe you’ve got the little ones in tow, and they’re not too keen on those 17 milers (yet). Lucky for you, Zion National Park is generous with its selection of short hikes with accompanying jaw-dropping view—-in other words, big rewards with little effort.
1. Northgate Peaks – 4.4 miles round trip – Easy – 2 hours
This is an easy and scenic tour for sure but it’s in a remote location in the park, Kolob Canyon. You’ll trek through Navajo sandstone, sage meadows and pretty pines. You’ll see lava outcrops and knock your socks off views of Northgate Peaks and North Guardian Angel.
2. Water Canyon – 2 miles roundtrip – Easy 3/4 to 1 1/4 hours
Water Canyon trail leads to a slot canyon. The canyon is a mini subway experience with tunneled walls, and just a trickle of water. This is a great trail for families with older children who will enjoy a bit of a technical challenge.
3. Lower Emerald Pool – 1.2 miles roundtrip – Easy – 1/2 hour
Easiest of easy. This little hike is paved and wide. Zion is probably the most generous of national parks, always handing out life-changing views to every single visitor. If you’ve got more time and energy, you might want to trek on to the Middle and Upper Pool trails. Keep in mine the trail is no longer paved and follows a rocky path.
4. West Bank of the Virgin River – 2.6 miles one way – Easy – 1 to 1 1/2 hours
It’s time to get the kids out of the car and walk Zion Canyon-the parks aorta. What to expect on this trail: birds, mule deer, views of Mount Majestic, Cathedral Mountain, the Spearhead, and the Great White Throne.
5. The Watchman – 2 miles roundtrip – Easy – 1 hour
Because sometimes a leisurely stroll through ancient seabeds, eroding plateaus and sedimentation is just what your overworked, overstimulated soul needs.
