RV Privacy Shades

RV Privacy Shades

RV Privacy shades are a necessary item given the closeness often found in many campgrounds.  The standard window shades fitted to most RV’s are “Day/Night” pleated fabric that have a lighter opaque section and a darker full block material.  This allows daytime privacy with the lighter one while the full block provides the same for night time.

Some motor homes are equipped with dark tinted windows that provide adequate privacy during the day.  These still require a full cover for night time.  The windows in the front, including the driver and passenger side along with the windshield, have a far less tint and offer little privacy in the day with zero at night.  These normally have a horizontal tracked draw curtain or a vertical rolled blind that provides a solid privacy barrier.

Higher line coaches often are equipped with electric powered shades and automatic front privacy blinds.  These are capable of shutting off the outside world at the push of a button.  The top-of-the-line window shade for these powered units is probably the “Silhouette” by Hunter Douglas.  It looks much like a veiled venetian blind of a high quality.  When powered down, it allows light to come through a white opaque veil.  Continuing to power it down after it is fully extended causes the venetian blind-like slats within the veil to close.  This delivers full privacy day or night.

In addition to providing privacy, these window light closures offer other benefits.  Keeping the sun from shining in on a hot day can be very beneficial in providing a cooler coach interior.  Also, closing your shades when you are going to be leaving your rig unattended can keep would-be thieves from visually casing your valuables or even unsure whether it is occupied or not.

Adding rope lighting up inside the window valances can make any window shade an attractive feature in an RV.  This can be a do-it-yourself project or it can be done by an appropriate RV service shop.

So, as you can see, window shades can supply more than just the needed privacy.  They can enhance the interior mood and ambiance.  Window shades can be a truly multi-tasking feature found on all RV’s.  Put them to work.  Enjoy.

Some are much better than others.. Our day shades can be seen through and out the other closed blind on the other side of the coach..

  2. I also very curious what do you use to clean the darn things.

And they are not that difficult to repair when the cords wear out – easy directions with video available on the Net.

  10. We put up a heavy plain quilted barrier behind the cab seats in our Jayco Granite Ridge 3100 SS. The barrier allows us to watch TV in the entertainment center over the cab, but blocks the view from the cab area. Makes the whole area seem more like a cabin without having to look at the seats! Our dog goes under the quilted barrier and uses the cab as her personal "porch", where she loves to look out or curl up and sleep…Mrs. Minnie
