If you are looking for convenience, consider Red Gate Campground and RV Park, Savannah’s best-kept secret. They are the closest park to Downtown Savannah (only six miles away). The Park features include a pool, swings overlooking the lakes, a 1,200-square foot clubhouse with large-screen TV, pool table, outdoor screened pavilion and a myriad of outdoor games.
The Red Gate Campground & RV Park is situated on 200 acres, has four fishing lakes, tons of live oak trees, horseback riding, a menagerie of animals, and is a birder’s paradise. The National Audubon Society actually comes to the Park, once a year to inventory the birds on the property.
While you are staying at Red Gate Campground & RV Park be sure to schedule a trail ride through the Park. Just imagine riding through their grounds, which were once an encampment for Union and Confederate soldiers. The horseback trail rides include instruction, all necessary riding equipment, and 30, 60 or 90 minutes in the saddle. Exploring the grounds on horseback under a canopy of moss-draped live oaks is an experience you won’t forget.
The grounds have been in the family since 1932 when Harry Martin acquired the property. Martin, the great-grandfather of J.D. Smith, who runs the campground, originally used the property as a dairy farm. Later, the property became a sod farm. There’s a separate event center on the property that hosts weddings and family reunions, plus a three-bedroom farmhouse loft that is for rent. Where the RVs are parked there is plenty of wide-open space, throughout the rest of the Park, you will find beautiful wooded areas.
So, get out and enjoy your vacation the way it was meant to be: experienced in nature. Red Gate Campground & RV Park is an oasis of southern charm waiting to be enjoyed.
