Trailer Life Cream of the Crop Campsites: Fort Wilderness at Walt Disney World
Like me, I’m sure many of you have heard about how great the Campsites at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort are for RV camping in the Orlando area. The features and amenities of this campground are truly amazing, so it’s worth a look if you’d like a rustic yet comfortable place to rest up after a day at the Orlando amusement parks.
Fort Wilderness opened in 1971 on 700 acres as part of the original accommodations of Walt Disney World Resort. It still features a quaint American Frontier theme and is located at 4510 North Fort Wilderness Trail in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, near the Magic Kingdom theme park.
The campground has a whopping 694 mostly-shaded RV sites available, each with full hookups (30/50 amp service). Each site accommodates up to 10 guests, although each site varies in length (from 25’ to 65’) and amenities. For your convenience, each site also has a picnic table, charcoal grill and cable TV. High-speed Internet access is available for an extra fee.
Comfort Stations located throughout the campground provide immaculate private toilets and showers, laundry facilities, phones and ice machines, all within a nicely decorated, air-conditioned building. Groceries, camping supplies and sundry goods can be bought at the campground’s Meadow and Settlement Trading Posts. The park also offers campground guests free transportation between Fort Wilderness and the various destinations within the Walt Disney World Resort.
Last year’s rates started at $57 per night plus tax, and vary depending on season, dates and occupancy. The campground is open year round. Reservations can be made online or by calling (407) WDW-MAGIC or (407) 939-6244.
Campground Activities: Take a break from the theme park scene by trying any of these fun activities right at the campground: horse and wagon rides, swimming, archery, bike and watercraft rentals, fishing, and multi-use trails. Don’t miss the nightly sing-along with Disney characters Chip ‘n’ Dale, followed by a Disney movie showing “under the stars.” There may be no such thing as too much fun, but a vacation stay here gets pretty close! See the Trailer Life Directory campground review for a full list of amenities and recreational options.
Pets: This park is one of the best for camping with pets. There are several leashed dog walking trails and even an off-leash Waggin’ Trails Dog Park for play time. In my opinion, the best feature by far is the day or overnight kennel care available to watch your dog, cat or small animal while you enjoy a day of adventure at the Walt Disney World Resort. Be advised Fort Wilderness does not allow pets to stay in tents or vehicles without air conditioning.
Extras: Laundry service can be arranged by calling housekeeping. Four-seat electric carts can be rented daily or weekly to provide transportation within the campground. Babysitting and child services are available for children ages 6 months to 12 years. You can even arrange to have a child specialist accompany your group to lend a helping hand during the day’s activities at the Disney Parks! Dining options at the campground include one restaurant, two dinner shows and snack bars, all offering American food ranging from under $15-$60 per person (based on average guest check).
Climate: Central Florida typically experiences pleasant temperatures all year: average daily temperature is 61°F in winter and 80°F in summer (and up into the low 90s), with average humidity around ranging from 68-76 percent respectively.

Fort Wilderness is our favorite campground. We visit every year and our most visit lasted two weeks. With all there is to do, or not do, at the campground we only spent three days at the parks.
Queen of the Road,
On your next visit be sure to check out the newly remodled swimming pool and the brand new hot tub.
Magical Memories
This is a great place to bring the family if you enjoying camping. It is great that you can bring your dog also.

Great feedback Ms. Queen! It must have been fun to have all the doggies so close together for socializing and dog walks.
Did you at least get hot tub privileges at one of the other resorts since there isn’t one at the campground? How curious……I suppose they think campers don’t appreciate a nice soak after a long day of exploring the parks. 🙂
Thanks for sharing your insight!

We loved Ft Wilderness and we’re a couple – no kids. The put dog owners on a “doggie loop,” so you’re all together which is nice, but they charge $5 per pooch. (What would Goofy say?) Only complaint – it’s one of the only resorts at WDW with no hot tub!
