Of all the questions posed by TV reporters, by people in emails and in person, those pertaining to harvesting rainwater are at the top of the most frequently asked list. In this post, I show exactly how I collect rainwater for both the holding tank and my drinking bottles.
Here we go –
As the rain falls, it collects atop my Lance Camper and is directed to the gutters. I place the blue recycling bins directly beneath the pour spouts and let gravity do the rest. Once collected in the blue bins, I use 2 slightly different procedures from this point, one for the holding tank and one for the drinking bottles.
For the on board holding tank, the rainwater is pumped by a 1/2 horsepower electric water pump which takes the water from the recycling bin, pushes it through a Katadyn Water Filter and into the holding tank receptacle on the passenger side of the Lance Camper.
For harvesting rainwater in my drinking bottles, I use the Katadyn Base Camp Filtering system. From the collecting bins, the rainwater is poured into the Base Camp Bag, hung on the Lance Camper just above a series of 32 ounce BPA free drinking bottles. Once filled, they go directly into the refrigerator to cool from there.
Without the ability to harvest and filter rainwater, the Mobile Base Camp would be challenged to remain “off road and off the grid” for very long. When it comes to staying hydrated and hygienic, I really am going farther, going greener. Mother Nature supplies the rain and gravity, I supply a little effort and Katadyn Water Filters take it from there!

In speak with the experts on water filtration and purification, they assure me that filtering rainwater is a safe way to go. I’m with you, once in China & again in Yellowstone I contracted a waterborne pathogen, I’m not looking for my third strike. I filter the rainwater on the off chance of birds, squirrels and even a raccoon hanging out on top of my Rig.
If you have the fuel & are able to boil, I say have at it.

I am from the “be prepared in advance” school and try to take sufficient drinking water with me whenever I would go dry camping for too long. (I do frequently go for several days with no hook-ups) I certainly subscribe to the “harvesting” and simple filtering of water for non-consumption purposes; but shouldn’t rain water, especially when collected from an RV rooftop be boiled in addition to filtering before drinking it?
This question comes from someone who years ago would get on his hands in the prone position and drink water straight from any mountain stream and never give it a second thought.

Good ideas Bryan. Drinking water is the number one limiting factor to off-the-grid camping. I also carry a couple 6 gallon Jerry Jugs of water for when I run out. I make sure they are always refilled as soon as possible (for instance when dumping or at a gas station) so that they are always ready.
