Five Florida RV adventures — discover fun on the beach on the river or on the sea in a snowbirding paradise.
Few states can compete with Florida when it comes to variety and sheer fun of its snowbird adventures. From reeling in hefty tarpon on the Gulf Coast to going on an upscale shopping spree in downtown Tampa, the Sunshine State caters to snowbirds of every feather.
1. Destin
Paradise on the Florida Panhandle is really the only way to describe Destin, one of the country’s best beach and fishing destinations. Located 48 miles east of Pensacola and nestled on a peninsula that separates the Gulf of Mexico to the south and Choctawhatchee Bay to the north, the area is a beachcomber’s mecca. It’s also earned the nickname as “the World’s Luckiest Fishing Village,” boasting the state’s largest charter fishing fleet, with vessels that take fishing enthusiasts out to Gulf waters to catch vermilion snapper, amberines and white snapper.
2. Flagler County/Palm Coast
You won’t find any high-rise buildings, roller coasters or amusement parks along the shores of Flagler County, just pristine beaches, abundant wildlife and a whole new appreciation for easy living in this laid-back pocket of Florida’s Atlantic coast.
3. Fort Myers
A gem on Florida’s Gulf Coast, Fort Myers and its surrounding beaches and islands constitute an excellent, sun-filled getaway. Not only does the region boast miles of beaches covered with white sand and colorful seashells, it’s also home to numerous museums, restaurants, family-friendly theme parks and scenic waterways. Check out the homes of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford — the area’s famous neighbors.
4. St. Lucie County
Known as the gem of Florida’s Treasure Coast on the Atlantic, St. Lucie County offers a little bit of everything that makes the Sunshine State great. The New York Mets have called Port St. Lucie their springtime home for years, and there’s nothing quite like seeing the team play in the casual preseason atmosphere.
5. Tampa
Tampa blends the vibrant atmosphere of a big metropolis with ample recreational opportunities that include laid-back canoe rides, wildlife watching and wilderness hikes. Picture-postcard Gulf beaches unfurl for 20 miles to the west, including lively Clearwater Beach and the more secluded bays of Caladesi Island State Park. Check out the fabulous Florida Aquarium.
