Some facts about Camden:
• The community didn’t always have such a tourist-friendly reputation. It was primarily a center for shipbuilders and millers until the 1880s, when the natural harbor and surrounding hills were discovered by wealthy city dwellers seeking rustic escapes.
• The picturesque harbor village is so quintessentially New England that the blockbuster 1950s movie Peyton Place was filmed on the town streets.
• Many of Camden’s signature attractions—the library, the village green, the opera house—were contributed by wealthy summer visitors.
• Summer is still the busiest time of Camden’s year and leaf peepers crowd the viewpoints in fall. But don’t miss winter, when the U.S. National Toboggan Championships barrelthe Camden Snow Bowl, America’s only toboggan chute.
