The End of the Road
The capital city of La Paz is the next stop. Many travelers, including Mexicans, say this is their favorite city in all of Baja. In addition to a beautiful beachfront walkway, La Paz is famous for scuba diving. It’s not uncommon to dive with friendly giant manta rays and sea lions. This is a good place to pick up supplies or hard-to-find parts. This is where you can catch a ferry to the mainland city of Mazatlan. The Casa Blanca RV Park in town actually has some 50-amp plugs.
After La Paz, the highway splits on its way to Cabo. If you go west, you can visit Todos Santos, which has excellent shopping, restaurants and is considered an artists’ colony.
Head east at the split and you come to Los Barriles, which offers some of the best fishing in Baja. The deep water starts just offshore. Martin Verdugo’s Beach Resort is a popular camping spot near the beach with 30-amp outlets.
Our final stop is Cabo San Lucas, which has lots of tourists and aggressive salespeople hassling you as you walk down the street. If you are ready to rock, shop, fish, golf and eat, then this place is for you. Vagabundos Del Mar RV Park is the place to stay here.
Well, we’ve made it. We’re at land’s end, as far south as you can drive. There is only one thing left to do: Get in the RV and drive all the way back home. It’ll be a great trip.
To be continued next Thursday ….

John, we live at our home in San Felipe from October-May pretty much. We keep our motorhome on our property which is about 20 miles south of town. When you are ready to venture this way for your reporting please get in touch with us as we can accomodate another big rig on our lot assuming your not concernced about driving down 3+ miles of dirt road that you must go very slow over so the cabinets don’t vibrate off the wall. We are total solar at our house so you will be boondocking. We can show you all around the San Felipe area and further south. However, getting a motorhome or 5th wheel past the town of Puertocitos south of us is not passable at all. Trucks with campers can make it however past this town. The pavement ends here and it is quite challenging to continue. The road from Mexicalli to San Felipe is getting better with most of the drive one way in each direction. There is about a 50 mile stretch that must be driven a little slower due to rough pavement conditions. There are two border crossings coming into Mexicalli now – one is in coming in through Calexico and the other is called Calexico east. Coming in I prefer the old original crossing as it accomodates the big rigs better. Going back to the USA I prefer Calexico East as it is a little easier that way.

Your Mexico information was good but not 100% correct. The vehicle bond is no longer required, just a vehicle permit that cost about $30.00 and is good for 10 years for RV’s. For trucks pulling RV’s or toad’s a vehicle permit is also required and these are only for 1 year. Permits are required for travel outside the Free Trade Zone, the Baja is all Free Trade Zone.
