I’ve been watching my weight lately.
In fact, I’ve been on a diet.
This means, sadly, a summer with no beer. In the old days, I’d down a couple of 300-calorie pale ales before crawling out of bed.
Now I receive my daily mouse-sized serving of low cal, low carb wine from an eye-dropper. My wife just dribbles a few drops onto my tongue to go along with my evening rations. At least she tells me it’s wine. It’s probably just sugar free grape juice, or maybe just purple water.
In the old days, my “veggies” were breaded, deep fried, and often paired with “veggie based” condiments like tomato ketchup. (What do you mean, a tater tot isn’t a vegetable?)
Now my vegetables are green and steamed. Sometimes, if I’m lucky, they get misted with a hint of zero calorie fake butter spray. I can lose weight simply by looking at them.
Yes, I’ve made many culinary sacrifices in the pursuit of baggy clothes.
But there’s one camping food item that I will not give up.
You guessed it: S’MORES!
There’s something about that combination of graham crackers, chocolate, and roasted marshmallows that screams CAMPING to me.
As the legendary admiral Farragut (or was it Whatagut?) once said: “Damn the calories; full speed ahead!”
Sorry, health nuts. This ain’t no fruit salad.
When we camp, we like to make s’mores.
This is one dessert treat that’s loaded with carbohydrates, sugar, fat, and everything else the doctors tells us we can’t eat. No wonder they taste so good. (Of course, I only eat ’em for the antioxidants in the chocolate.)
What’s our secret to great s’mores? We often add a little PEANUT BUTTER to our s’mores. Hey, don’t knock it until you try it. It’s delicious!
What about YOU?
Do you like s’mores?
Do you have fond memories of gulping down these crunchy, sweet, messy treats by the campfire?
Do you have any special tips or recipes to share with the rest of us?

I eat lots of whole grains, beans, olive oil and dark chocolate. Am 79 and just starting to slow down. I, ll try the smore again with suggested variasions.

I definately am a smores fan myself!
I found another alternate way to make them. Instead of just a Hershey Bar, use a peppermint patty!
Camping
We’re going to be camping next month. Can anyone give me tips on things you would normally forget to pack so I’m well prepared. There’s going to be water parks, and rides, plus the traditional camping stuff like fishing. We’re going to be staying in tents, not a cabin or RV so we won’t be needing any kitchen stuff I don’t think. Any ideas would be great, thanks!

Hmmm.. I wonder what the person who’s eaten healthy all of their lives says on their deathbed. “I should have had another Tofu burger”

Eat good balanced meals of your choice and find a exercise that you enjoy,( mine is running) 45 mins a day and if you have been a good soldier all week have your beer on Sunday and congratulate yourself , you deserved it!
Ruth
If you can’t do chocolate try putting a little butterscotch or caramel sauce on the graham cracker, tastes great. Another alternative is to use chocolate covered digestive biscuit with your roasted marshmallows, no mess and all the good taste.
Sean Michael
Just kidding about the beer for breakfast. It’s much better to start the day as Winston Churchill did, with a whiskey and cigar.
Just kidding! (again)
On a more serious note, I love the Nutella idea. I like that stuff and suspect it would make a nice alternative to milk chocolate. We also sometimes substitute dark chocolate. We’ve been told that the chips melt well for s’mores.
Ben Lukacek
for a campfire free smore, try nutella chocolate spread and marshmallow cream on the graham crackers. It’s safe for the young ones, Can be done where there are fire restrictions and it’s kosher for your jewish friends ( they don’t eat marshmallows). I hope you enjoy. I’m going to try the peanut modification today. thanks for the idea.

Make s’mores with dark choclate, It is good for the heart! The healthier your diet, The longer your life!

Finding food that is healthy is very important. Especially when traveling. I think when I camp I actually eat healthier. We are limited on the processed foods that you are able to bring or least I try to limit the junk from being brought on the trip. Something about the doors brings the health nut in me.
Paul LeSage
In addition to Facebook and Twitter, I sure as heck don’t do beers before I get out of bed. I sure hope you were kidding.
Robyn Hawk
I don’t do Chocolate – well sometimes in ice cream!
The thing I missed most was Mac & Cheese!!! so I came up with a recipe that I can live with…and it is sooooo easy!
Whole Wheat or Quinoa Macaroni
1/4 shredded Sharp Cheddar
small Plain 0% Fat Fage Greek Yogurt (or about 1 cup)
Mix and serve creamy or put it in a baking dish and bake for that creamy/crunchy baked mac fave!
Enjoy!
Julie Rea
Chocolate does not agree with me, so smore’s are out. My daughter has a great alternative, although it sounds strange, it is really good. Saltine cracker, small piece of cheddar cheese, and a toasted marshmallow! I did not want to try it, it just sounded so strange, but it was very very good!
Sean Michael
Thanks Jerry, we love Whole Foods and overall I agree – I feel much better now that I am avoiding fried foods. We also love hummus and I will check out Tahini. And I can live with enjoying good wine instead of beer. If that’s the price of health, I don’t mind paying.
I understand that many don’t cotton to this newfangled Facebook thingy.
Of course, I have relatives who say the same about the Internet. “Oh my, computers! I can’t touch those darned things, else I might break somethin’.” 🙂
What I like about Facebook is that we see real faces and names – it’s refreshing in this day and age when many want to hide anonymously behind a keyboard. I guess from this perspective, Facebook harkens back to the way things used to be. But if you don’t want to use Facebook, or the Internet, or computers, that is your choice, and it’s fine with me.
Now, let’s all go have some s’mores…
Hunter
I’m another who won’t Facebook, or Amazon Kindle.
I avoid anything with Gram Crackers because they are loaded with Salt Peters. They were originally created for mothers to give to babies so they wouldn’t play with their genitals. The Salt Peters disapate the drive to touch down there and sex drive too.
So Gram Crackers are great for children and would be naughty teens, but at my age…
Bob
I 2nd Glen’s comment, we don’t do Facebook, Kindle, or Nook !!!!
S’mores do sound good …………………
Glen Jones
Hey, some of us do not do Facebook or Amazon Kindle.
Besides that your making me hungrey for s-mores

Those vegies might seem like the “down side” of good eating now, but when you turn 100, still know your name and didn’t “blow up” at 60, you will be thankful.
As for enjoying a better meal, start shopping in the “Vegan” section of your store (usally a small section in the freezer area) or find Whole Foods markets. You will find some great tasting meat substitutes you can make wonderful meals out of.
Go on the Internet and find some recipts for Hummus – easy and cheap to make – a great appetizer – use Tahini – you wll love it.
