RV.net Blog gets a facelift – Update

By popular demand: if you are reading an article on RV.net blog, you can now click on the author’s name right under the title to see at once all articles published by that author.

RV.Net Blog has been redesigned to better fit the more widely used screen resolutions and to highlight the most popular sections and posts. The new design includes a three column format on the home page which allows for a more efficient use of the space. You can click on your favorite post, section, or link to read more.

The categories are now listed horizontally across the top, with each listing additional subcategories vertically upon rollover. To view all posts within a particular category or subcategory, simply click its name. You might notice we have consolidated some categories to make navigation easier. There is also a drop down menu in the right hand column if that suits you best.

On the home page, the column at the left features articles that have been highly rated, popular, have generated many comments, or have the potential of generating great interest.

We have included at the center column two frequently visited sections: Destinations and “How To”. These will show the two most recent posts in each of these categories. If you scroll down in the same center column, you will find the daily articles appear as they are posted, with the most recent post at the top.

The right column now includes our subscription services, a featured video, and a tag cloud which calls out the most popular terms. Each term may be clicked upon in order to see the related posts.

Take a few minutes to play around the new sections and let us know what you think. We thank those of you that have provided feedback already. It has helped us identify how to make your visit to RV.net more productive. We are in the process of tweaking some aspects of the blog, so your comments are most welcome!

For all of you who prefer to view the posts in chronological order like the old format would allow, we’ve now created a page titled Most Recent Posts which will enable you to do so. It is accessible via the top navigation bar, or at: http://blog.rv.net/most-recent-posts/

Thanks for finding the disabling Java Script Application. Page load time is now acceptable.

Thank you for your feedback. One Java script application has been disabled in order to reduce the downloading time. We believe this and the caching will help, but let us know.
We are also looking into adding a page that will simply list the articles as they are posted, similar to the old format, for those who might like that better. We’ll continue to monitor closely this section and the pageview patterns.
Again, thanks for posting your comments. Keep them coming!

I liked the old blog better. Loaded faster, showed the new stuff (dated!) at the top and didn’t need my concentration to discover if there was something new to read.

I think the new format is too “busy”.

As previously noted the download time sucks big time and I’m on a high speed connection. The progress bar on IE gets to the 99.99 point and then it is as if IE locks up for the next half a minute or so before it finishes. How many times do I have to bring up a page before the static stuff is cached? I’ve brought up 4 articles with the home page in between and the speed has not improved.

Previously I read about 2/3 of the articles but with this speed I’ll be much more selective.

Thank you all for your comments. We are working to balance the size and content as we continue to “tweak” the new design/layout. Note that the download time should also improve somewhat as your system caches the static items on the site.

Also, Ken, in response to your previous comment, you can still see each and every post that is published within the center column titled “RECENT POSTS”. Every new post will appear in that section as it is published. If you check daily, you won’t miss a thing!

I frankly like the old format – it provided an eclectic read. Not organized but always interesting. It should not be difficult to continue to offer this view as an option. The new look is fine if a viewer is looking for some specific topic, but I have found several gems among the posts that I would not have read if they had not just been in the cue.

At 26K it takes to long to load. Not all of us live in the world of high speed. 26k is on the best of days. If you live in the country we have on other choices.

I’ve noticed that your blog posts coming through the RSS feed are no longer full posts, just the first couple of lines. It would be great to see the full posts again!

The new site is great. Easy access to all the information. But – I agree with Tom Liberty. Too long to download – even with my high speed internet connection. Cut down on the download time.

I would like to say that the roof air situation has gone a little to high priced for what you get. I own an older nice Class A Coachmen. It has two roof airs that are shot. The coach is too nice to not use but the air costs is too much. I can temporarily use window units that all total cost me less than $350.00 for the two. The units have star ratings for energy uses. I prefer to have them permanantly installed but it is not safe or reasonable. Being disabled the chore to put them in A window then take them out to move is A bit too much. I’m just wanting to blow off some anxienty feelings. Anyone else had this sort of problem?

I like the new format which provides more info on the monitor in one or two pages. The ONLY problem is that the site takes much to much time to loadup to a point where Java allows limited scrolling of the page as the remainder Text and Images are loaded. I am working from a High Speed internet connection and I wonder how Much Longer it may take for the site to load for those folks on the road who may be using a Cellular Broadband Card of a Modem. I use both of these connect features while traveling and am concerned……….
