On our last day before intercepting the Alaska Highway at Dawson Creek, the dog, as usual, forced me into a morning walk around the campground. Wildflowers were blooming on the edge of the property and I allowed the dog to do her thing while I photographed many of the usual suspects like Indian paintbrush. For me, there is no more pleasant way to spent a morning than being outdoors with a camera in hand.
Then I came to this beautiful flower which I did not recognized and still can’t identify. If anybody out there has an idea of what it might be, please post a comment to the blog. I love the picture, but I would like to be able to identify the flower.

We made the trip to Alaska back in April, arriving the 1st of May. It was cold with some snow still. went up the Alaskian Hwy. and returned thru Chicken and over the top of the world hwy to Dawson city, and then on to Whitehorse and down the Cassiar hwy, and east to Jasper/Baniff and down the icefield pkw and on into Glacer natl. park. in late June.
Hope you see more flowers than we did. Lots of people said go early and avoid the rush. Wasn’t any one there when we got there. Some workers opening up the tourist places. but the roads were open mostly. It is beautiful at that time, all the mountains were still full of snow.
Lots of moose and elk on the road, Buffalo along the Alaska hwy in BC..Carribou were licking the road for the calcium when we went thru.
Look out for the bears.
Have a good time. But the snow will be flying soon!

The flower is commonly known as Orange Hawkweed (Hieracium aurantiacum.) It is an introduced species from Europe and is extremely aggressive along the roadbanks and in lawns – not a very popular plant

Jack and Nancy – I think you’re thinking of Fireweed – but that’s a very deep pink/reddish flower that is also gorgeous, but not the one above. I too have a picture of the flower Ron shows, and would also love to know it’s name.

I believe it is a fire flower or something like that. My brother lives up there and when we went in 1995, I think that’s what he said it was. We are jealous that you are on your way to Alaska. We are ready to go again, but are in limbo right now. My brother lives in Wasilla and has lived there most of his adult life. Keep us updated on your trip.

Sorry, can’t help you on the flower. But wanted to tell you that we’re enjoying your journey journal so much. Sometime soon we’re going to Alaska, and it’s good to read about it in a personal account as it’s happening; what kind of camera & lens do you have? your pictures are fantastic !
