HEY, GREAT-GRANDPA …

By Barry Zander, Edited by Monique Zander, the Never-Bored RVers

    … AND GREAT-GRANDMA.  I’d like your help.

Hundreds of folks in attendance at last November’s 49ers Encampment in Death Valley cheered loudly paying tribute to a 90-year-old veteran attending the 5-day conclave.  He had driven his motorhome to Furnace Creek to join the happy throngs last year as he has done for numerous years before.   [I don’t remember much more than that about him.]

About a year earlier, we were parked in a military campground, where I struck up a conversation with a neighbor who was traveling alone in his travel trailer.  He mentioned that his wife decided to stay home this trip, but encouraged him to take off on his own in pursuit of his love of RVing.  I was startled when he told me he had just celebrated his 80th birthday.

Last month in the Costco Connection, I read an article that started out “I’M AN 85-YEAR-OLD woman who travels full time in a 23-foot RV.”  She was proud to say that she doesn’t stay in campgrounds.

Since it’s not my usual policy to ask the age of those we encounter in our travels, I haven’t built up a file of “the generation ahead of mine” [those of you who remember FDR] who continue to ply the highways and campgrounds of America in RVs.  We all meet people who are proud to say they are 80 or 90, but others prefer to hide their age until it contributes significantly to the conversation.

That’s why I’m asking for your help. If you are of that generation and still taking the rig out from time-to-time or full-time, I’d like to hear from you.  If it’s your parents, grandparents or neighbors who are still enjoying the RV life, I welcome your contribution.  Or, if you have an issue with octogenarians and nonagenarians on the road, let RV.net readers know what you think.

To tell your story briefly or give your thoughts on the subject, I welcome your comments below.  I’d like to know what kind of rig you have, including length, how long you’ve had it, and how often you use it.

If you have a longer story to tell or are willing to be interviewed, please email me directly at [email protected].  Write your story in the email … or let me know the best way to get in touch for more information – email or phone call (include your time zone).  Sending one or two photos would be great.

Once I get a few stories, I plan to combine them into a magazine article, or, at least, a series of blogs.

Many of us pre-octogenarian RVers wonder what’s in our future.  We love the life, but for how long can we keep it up?  What are some of the unexpected health and lifestyle situations ahead for us?  It would be good for us to know what may be down the road and over the horizon.

    Lily Pads - 1226

From the “Never-Bored RVers,” We’ll see you on down the road.

We live in Alaska but store our 34 ft 5th wheel in Oregon, we fly down in the Fall and take off. This year we plan to go to New England. Then we go to Mission Texas to spend the winter. We square dance and etc. We have 99,000 miles on our 2005 pickup and this is our 6th trailer. Oh, I am 78 and my husband is 74. We dont travel the Alcan anymore, but did it many times. We dont intend to stop until we cant drive anymore. We are pretty healthy.

82 years young and after over 30 years of RVing my wife and I still travel at least once a month and love it as much or more than when we started!!! We bought a new diesel pusher in 1990 while still running our business and put 100,000 miles on it. Many of our friends asked how we made it all happen. I believe you can do anything you truly love and want to do. If you haven’t started yet NOW is a good time.

I am a youngster @ 69 traveling with my bride (63)all over USA and Canada. I enjoyed reading everyones posts and looking forward to many years of travel & adventures on the roads. Purchased a used 1992 Country Coach Concept in 2008 for traveling to chase my passion of inline speed skate racing all over USA and Canada averaging 12-15K per year. We are enjoying traveling by RV to be able to visit National & State Parks, family and friends . RV travel really opens the door to explore, adventures and getting to know people from mall walks of life. Hoping to go full time in 2012 for 10 + years at least. Being active in an RV adds to a very high quality of living life to it’s fullest as many of you have stated. It is part of our health plan for sure. Happy Trails to you all and hope our pathways cross.

We crossed 100,000 on two of our 5 motor homes both of them with a head start and the current A joined us at 12,000 and now shows 19,000. Since we are still youngsters at 71 and active square dancers the plan is to see how long this one will go or we go which ever comes first. The first two pushed past the century mark were done while employed full time, now that is past the miles should keep on a rising trend. Gas prices are a pain but a pain felt mainly by the merchants at our destinations as when the budget runs out we eat at “home”. The only real difference since retiring is that night trips into strange areas are very rare. Not having to rush back for monday morning makes trips much more relaxed. The cats were not allowed to express their views here.

My parents, both turn 85 this year, are visiting me in Maine from AZ in their 32 ft Class A Allegro towing a Honda CRV. They have been campers since my teen years. They are both in good health. Dad won’t drive after dark and they average between 150 to 250 miles on the days they travel. We purchased a 36ft Pace Arrow this year and plan on seeing them next July at a family reunion in Northern Idaho. Don’t know how many more years they will make long trips but as long as he can drive, they will leave the desert in the summer to the higher elevations of AZ.

I’ll be 80 next February. I drive a 27′ Fleetwood Terra Class A and pull a 2007 Saturn Ion. We bought our RV in March, 2006 with the intent of my husband driving it, but he had an accident and totalled his truck 2-days after we committed to the sale (we hadn’t taken delivery yet) so he decided not to ever drive again, so guess who drives it, and I pull a “toad” behind it, no less!! The largest thing I had ever driven prior to the RV was a Dodge Caravan! Driving it is one of the easiest things I have ever done and would recommend that all women co-pilots get in the pilot’s seat to help with the driving. I’m a musician so we travel often to contests, workshops and campouts with other musicians. My hubby is my co-pilot!!

The problem with the whole thing is the very high price of fuel, be it gasoline or diesel. I know that hasn’t an effect on some people, but I am sure it still bothers them too. For us poor folk, it’s a hardship. We go whenever we can, which is difficult ,as we used to be full-timers. We have downsized to accomodate me, my wife and our dog (20lbs). We really miss the adventure, the new places and people, plus the varied fishing that was one of the great things. Also, now there are people, of all kinds, more than ever getting out and causing camping fees to equal the motels. Take the prices and long distance travel is the cheapest way to go whether by motorhome or trailer. And staying free complements everything. I am in my 70’s and do not plan to stop ever. Nothing better than a campfire in the morning with a fresh pot done on the fire. Good travels!!

      Howdy Barry,

My older brother, who served as Gen. Kreuger’s driver in the Pacific Philippine Islands Campaign during WW2, just quit pulling his 34′ Airstream in 2009, when he couldn’t see cars coming at him… His kids(in their 50s) & I ‘ fussed’ him into it..
During the last 2 years his health has gone down and his wife’s almost bedridden..
I know we did right; making them stop, but it seemed to take all of the life out of them… He’ s 88 and she’s 86… They were Airstreamers for almost 30 years and
had other campers before that.. RVing is a lifestyle like no other…

I have a friend who is 83, does habit for humanity builds, drives a 40 ft HR Endeavor. Lives full time in the coach and loves the lifestyle. Just attended a birthday party for another friend who is now 77, he and his wife are full timers and live in a 40 ft HR Endeavor, they too love the lifestyle. As for me I’m the baby of the bunch, 64, been fulltiming for 10 years and my wife and I BOTH love the lifestyle and cannot see coming off the road unless forced too.

My husband is 79, I am 77. We belong to a square dance camping club, and camp with them for a weekend once a month. We also use our RV for long trips, like attending weddings and graduations. We are also considering being full-timers after we both “retire” for the second time, since we both still work part time. We will definitely be RVing until we both lose our driver’s license.

We missed our honeymoon in the spring of 2010 due to my wife’s diagnosis of rectal cancer the day after our wedding. After a year of therapy, we felt free to hit the road in our 2007 31C Winnie Access. We left Delaware on April 11th and returned on June 9th after 8686 miles, a wedding, a college graduation, and the Gateway Arch, Branson, Memphis, 4 corners, Grand Canyon, New Port Beach, Yosemite, near Park City, Yellowstone, Mt Rushmore, Detroit. Next spring, the good Lord willing, we’ll do Anchorage and Fairbanks via the Alcan highway.
I forgot to mention, I’ll be 82 in January and my bride is 78

I’m only 75 and I have a 35 foot Class A and tow a Chevy Tracker. About a month ago I got back from a trip to Wyoming (I live in California) and I may go to Oregon in September. I’ll be at Quartzite in January and then I’m off to Corpus Christi. I travel with two dogs and until recently a calico cat.

Being 79 years young, I still enjoy RVing in my 29ft Jayco motorhome. For 12 years we delivered new 5th wheels and travel trailers from the RV capitl (Elkhart, IN) to all 48 states including Alaska and Canada. During the past few years my wife contaced Parkinson/s and is unable to travel. I hope to continue my journeys one of these days. Met a lot of nice people in our travels and learned a lot of tricks.

I belive in a coment my father-in-law told me many years ago. ( he has since passed away) Travel while you can because if you wait until you retire or get old them you may not be able to do it. We started out while the kids were little and have been going ever since, with no intend of stoping until they take my drivers licencs away . If the good lord is willing and the creeks don’t rise.

I’m in an RV Club with 55 rigs. A few of the members are in their late 70’s or early 80’s. They’re in reasonably good health. They actually RV much more than we 60 somethings. I had one tell me that they are on overload when it comes to taken the rig out since they all realize that they are approaching the proverbial “wall”. One serious health issue and they’re done.

So they are going to “go for the gusto”, while they can.
