Hensley Manufacturing Lightens Up

Hensley Mfg. announces its first new travel trailer hitch since introducing the Hensley Arrow, the industry’s first anti-sway hitch, 15 years ago.

Hensley Cub Hitch Hensley Arrow Hitch

The Hensley Cub is a scaled-down version of the Hensley Arrow, the only hitch that truly eliminates trailer sway. The Cub works on the same principle as the Arrow, using the geometry of its linkage system to prevent trailer sway while allowing the tow vehicle full control over the trailer. No friction is involved, unlike a traditional sway control hitch.

Hensley Cub HitchThe Cub is designed for light trailers. While the Arrow is a “one size fits all” design, the folks at Hensley took some weight out of the new design to fit the trend toward smaller, lighter trailers.

Why hasn’t Hensley made any changes prior to this one?

“We decided before we sold our first hitch,” says Colin Connell, President of Hensley Mfg., “that safety would always be our primary consideration. We’ve tried different designs…everything from adjustable hitch bars to a yoke system (a Y or T shaped bracket to hold the hitch head in place). They all seemed like good ideas and we probably could have made a few extra dollars with a ‘New & Improved’ design, but they all had inherent flaws that decreased their reliability and safety.”

Hensley Cub HitchOf course, safety is still the primary concern of Hensley Mfg. The Cub may be a new product, but the engineering concepts are identical to the Arrow. After 15 years and thousands of Arrows on the road, Hensley has a proven design that is sure to provide an unmatched level of safety for many years to come.

I realize that I’m preaching to the choir of Hensley owners so take this with the good spirit that it was given.
You can hammer in a finishing nail with either a finishing nail hammer or a sledge hammer. Both will work. If you were accustomed to hammering with the sledge, how would you know that a better tool would be the finishing hammer. I’m sure that there is a place for the Hensley.
We’ve pulled a 9K #, 24′ travel trailer for many years until we purchased our 27′ Airstream three years ago. The first trailer, we used an EzLift hitch with a sway bar which was a pain to always hook-up, and the lift bars with chains attached were awkward. With our Airstream, we now use a Equal-izer brand hitch with straight bars. We have put over 45K miles on our Airstream, towed by a 1/2 ton 4WD Chev Avalanche. Never, in all kinds of weather, and traffic, have I had the least bit of sway or uncomfortable feelings with this hitch. It tows like a dream. In our A/S Club, most of our active members are now towing using the Equal-i-zer. The hitch is lightweight, strong, and eliminates sway. There is no way that I’d hang a 300# plus hitch on the back of my truck if I didn’t need it. It’s just that much more weight to tow, not including the maintenance and effort needed to hitch-up. Then there is the initial cost factor. As I stated, you can keep hammering with that sledge if you choose. Be open minded and check it out. http://www.equalizerhitch.com/ No affiliation with the manufacture, only a loyal customer. gary

Peter. What is the tow vehicle? Sounds like a low vehicle or an incorrect tow bar. Make sure to contact Hensley with your issues. I had a small issue and they took care of it immediately and went over my install to make sure it went right and didnt need any adjustments. Have they been able to address any of the problems?

I purchased the Hensley Arrow March 2008 after towing my Hybrid TT from Ohio to NC. I was traveling on I-77 south in WV going down the mountain side and a box truck passed me, causing the TT to be sucked in towards the truck; narrowly missing a sideswipe with the truck. This really scared the daylights out of my. I was ready to sell the darn thing and hadn’t even camped in it the first time.

I was very skeptical about the hitch system, especially at that price, but after watching the video I made a conscious decision to make the purchase. I decided that the lives and safety of those traveling with me, around me on the road, and myself was much more valuable than the cost of the hitch. I can honestly say I haven’t had any trouble connecting the TT to the TV.

This has been self assuring investment.

I have a Hensley hitch and use it to tow my Airstream. I have had nothing but problems with this hitch and although the trailer tows well it is a bear to connect on uneven ground. I have had problems with it bottoming out on some roads parking lots and road heaves.Traveling 5000 miles a year this in not the hitch for me.

I currently have two trailers and tow both with Hensley Arrows. I bought my first Arrow in 1997 and installed it on two successive trailers the last being a 32′ New Horizons. In 2005, I added a 28′ Airstream to my “stable” and installed a second Arrow on it. I have logged almost 200,000 miles in the time I have used the Arrows. I have experienced almost every condition imaginable during these years including several “panic” stops to avoid accidents. Never a hint of sway during any wind condition or due to any passing vehicle. During “panic” stops, the trailer stays right behind my truck. I am comfortable driving with one relaxed hand on the wheel. I have been towing trailers for over 50 years. I cannot recommend the Hensley Arrow too highly and will never again tow without one. It is all it claims to be.

We bought our Hensley a few years ago due to the wind and travel speeds on our long trips. Other hitches just couldn’t keep the sway away when passing trucks, side winds from over passes, and just general side winds. No problems now. Looked at Pullrite, but would have to modify my truck and was not easy to move from vehicle to vehicle. Other “anti-sway” hitches didnt eliminate sway. Expensive yes, but makes towing almost as easy as no trailer at all.

We bought a Hensley Arrow due to unreasonable sway when pulling our new 26′
Flagstaff with a 97 Ford Explorer, it was terrific and took care of the sway problem.
We traded for a Mercury Mountaineer 2002 and started on our first crosscountry
trip april 30, 2006. Traveled the first 230 miles on the New York state thruway at
65 miles per hour. Both trailer tires blew on the right side of the trailer. No sway,
nothing we were able to pull to the side safely. Would not want to travel with a
trailer without a Hensley Arrow hitch. GREAT HITCH

  9. Don Eyre

The Hensley is NOT the only one. I used a Pullrite hitch for years and as far as I’m concerned it was the best. No sway at all.

  10. Dalton Tamney

I have no problem with this item. I have had a Hensley for several years and it is everything it claims to be. I love it. News about a new lighter version is important I feel. I suffered for years with sway on trailers I pulled. This is a breath of fressh air.
