The center of your family vacation to explore Civil War history should start in Gettysburg, PA. The Confederate States of America, led by Generals Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson, were actually winning the War Between the States. Until they accidentally met up with the Union Army of the Potomac. Commanded by General George Meade in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, it was the largest and bloodiest battle the first week of July, 1863.

Your tour should start at the Gettysburg National Military Park and Visitors Center. Every summer, thousands of enactors gather here just to take part in the annual Gettysburg Civil War Reenactment. If you miss out on this experience, you will still be able to visit with period actors every weekend during the summer on the streets of this historic town. The Civil War comes alive before your very eyes. Something you can’t get by reading a book or viewing on a tablet or smart phone.
