While I have to admit that I’ve never been to Estes Park myself (despite living in Aurora, CO for 3 years back in the 80’s,) I have to point out that Estes park is hardly new and has been a favorite for almost a century. My late grandparents used to spend 1-2 weeks there every summer with their kids back in the late ’20s through early ’40s. My mother used to tell me about the fun they had even then, when camping out meant living in a tent or renting a cabin; RVs as we know them virtually nonexistent for much of that time.
I agree that Estes Park gives you a taste of what the Rocky Mountains are all about and hope to get the opportunity to return that way for a visit before too much longer.

We stayed in Estes Park way back when. The campground wasn’t that great (can’t remember the name) with the water coming out of the tap was tinted grey and had bubbles. I have been through there many other times the last being last summer on my motorcycle. I find it’s getting more and more crowded and losing some of that small town charm with traffic jambs. I do think the park and trail ridge dr some of the best views in Colorado, but if I were to camp I’d opt for Lake Granby. My two cents.

Estes Park is a great little town with many nice campgrounds, but the next trip we hope to be able to stay at Moraine Park Campground. There are no hookups but it puts you right in the National Park with Estes Park just a short drive. There is an abundance of wildlife that can be seen right from your campsite.

We camped at Elk Meadow last summer. Could see the park entrance road from our campsite. Really enjoyed our time in Estes. Of course we drive trailridge road and several other roads in the area, we didn’t have the correct tow vehicle to drive Fall River Rd this time but have done that in the past. Enjoyed a round of golf as well and the evening show at the campground.
Of course you need to shop the main drag at least once while there.
Great spot to visit.

Estes Park, CO is indeed a terrific destination. We camped there when our kids were 8 and 10. Had a wonderful time viewing beautiful scenery, riding horses, etc. The local hardware store had a big laugh when we asked to buy a space heater for our pop-up camper in August (we’re Floridians!).
One of the horse rides we took was a trail ride on mountain trails…some places very narrow; the kids loved it.
