There are few things in life that earn scorn quicker than firing-up the generator at 6:30 in the morning in order to brew that first cup of coffee. Camping without coffee for dad is like camping without ice cream for the kids (more on the ice cream in a future story); somebody is going to be in a foul mood and nobody is going to be happy! To the rescue comes Coleman® with an innovative drip coffeemaker that works with your propane stove, instead of electricity.
The Camping Coffeemaker works just like your drip coffeemaker at home. There is no water-level indicator in the reservoir, but that is easy enough to deal with by using the carafe to measure the water, and then adding a bit more to account for evaporation and the absorption of the coffee grounds. The carafe is, unfortunately, glass – so care must be taken, both in transport and use. Brewing time is longer than an electric drip unit and you will need a powerful stove to make it work, which is fine for us RV campers, but don’t try using this with your white gas stove. Ironically, the manual says not to use the coffeemaker on a stove burner rated in excess of 15,000 BTUs. I cannot imagine trying to use it on anything less! Coleman also warns against leaving the coffeemaker on the stove after the brewing has completed, so you will want to use a 10-cup thermos (you are drinking 2 cups immediately, right?) to keep your coffee piping hot.
I have been using the Camping Coffeemaker for about 14 months now, and I am impressed by its simplicity and utility. Despite the glass decanter, my unit still looks out-of-the-box new, which speaks to the durable design of the base and reservoir – despite my frequent 20,000 BTU assaults.

I purchased a stainless steel perculator that uses the stove for heat. When we leave home in winter, the water system is not available so I bring a few gallon milk jugs filled with water. I take the works out of the perculator and heat water for washing or shaving. Or heat water for mashed potatoes from flakes. When I want coffee I put the works back in and make coffee. With limited storage space, I want an appliance that will do as many different things as possible. This makes a good coffee maker, a tea pot, a water heater all in one appliance.

I use a French press and get wonderful rich coffe in the morning. Start with good quality coffee ground very coursely makes it as good or better than anything out of my electric dripper.

I’ve used the Coleman coffee maker for over 4 years now. I love it! it’s reliable and it’s well built. I set it up the night before and when I rise, I flick my flint lighter and in 20 minutes I have 12 cups of piping hot coffee.
A couple of tips. Remove the grill on the stove to get the main burner closer to the bottom of the coffee maker. You only need to turn the flame up to medium. Running the flame higher doesn’t make it drip any faster. It just makes the plastic hot and smell. Once you’ve finished making coffee, turn down the burner to low and it’ll keep the coffee piping hot. I always use paper filters to ease my clean up. My stick house has a gold filter, but it’s a lot more water to clean it up.
Out here in so cal, you can purchase them for about 35.00 dollars or so – but if you order it online, it comes with a blow-mold case and it’s worth it for the protection of the glass. A good friend of mine ordered his online, and it’s like a coleman lantern plastic case. strudy and well built.
I used to have the melita pour through – but I like the idea of getting up, lighting the flame, hitting the head, and going back to bed for 15 minutes and waiting for the coffee to brew. It also takes the chill out of the TT.

Every morning I heat 20 oz of water on the stove to boiling. Have a permanent coffee basket from my old coffee maker, with a filter and two scoops of coffee. Put it at the top of a 32 oz insulated Q.T. mug (all the gas stations sell one with theri brand) pour in the water, and a moment later, brop the filter with grounds in the trash, and add cream and sweetner. The mugs come with a top to avoid spills.
Easy as pie.

Bob, I agree. I was given my parents’ old enameled percolator that they used back in the 40s. They camped in a RV for 20 years after Dad retired, and gave it to me when they weren’t camping.Works beautifully. For a filter in the basket, I just cut a full sized basket filter for the electric coffeemaker and cut it into the appropriate size.
They also passed on the love of the RV lifestyle to me and my husband.

I have never used anything BUT an old coffee pot I got from my Dad..who used it on his Canadian lake camping and fishing trips from the 50’s. Still makes terrific coffee 50 years later. To use: add water & coffee…boil..drink.

We just use the good old perculator coffee pot, you also put this on a burner, or fire, charcoal briquets, etc. and just 5.99 you can’t go wrong! Just like GRANDMOMS.

Melitta makes a wonderful low tech solution in the form of manual coffemakers. Sized one cup to 10. Just heat your water and pour through a cone filter holder.

I have made coffee by heating water on the stove, and then pouring it through a Mr. Coffee filter held in a filter holder from a old electric coffee maker.
Just use 3 coffee mugs and a quart or so of boiling water from the stove. Make the first cup, add a TBS of coffee, add another cup of water after placing the coffee holder over mug #2. Place on mug 3 when done, and that will collect any leftover water dripings – it might be very strong, so don’t try drinking it straight.
You can add a couple more TBS coffee and pour more water into mug #1 and #2 as required, then place back on mug #3 until you need more.

You can also use your inverter, if you have one, and a small electric 4 cup Mr. Coffee, as long as the coffeemaker doesn’t use more amps than your inverter puts out. We have stopped at rest area’s and made coffee from the “juice” of our inverter. Great!
