The Susquehanna Valley that surrounds Milton is ripe with recreational opportunities. The 82-acre island opposite Front Street has been converted into Milton State Park, featuring day use facilities and miles of nature trails. Fans of Americana can find 17 wooden covered bridges across the tributaries to the Susquehanna. Nearby in Elysburg, Knoebels has been America’s largest free-admission amusement park since 1926; two wooden roller coasters and a century-old carousel stand out among the 63 rides.

This Susquehanna River town was founded before the American Revolution and named for the many nearby agricultural mills. It became a lumbering center noted for the manufacture of railroad cars; a replica of the world’s first tank car on Arch Street recalls the Milton Car Works, a company that’s the town’s oldest industry. Today, the Milton Freight Station constructed by the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad highlights the 719-building Milton Historic District and the Downtown Walking Tour. Lincoln Park on the Susquehanna is home of the town’s signature gazebo and hosts community celebrations and a summer music series. September brings the 10-day Milton Harvest Festival, packed with parades, pageants and scarecrow contests.
