I’ve previously written about the Autel Maxiscan MS300 (http://goo.gl/SUTM7M) code reader that enables owners to read and ERASE “check engine” lights. The Actron is similar to the MS300, but it has a few extra bells & whistles.

The Actron unit is designed for novices. One of the nicest features is a big “ERASE” button that allows you to easily erase error codes and turn off “check engine” lights.
Also, the PocketScan claims to be upgradable, so in theory you will have compatibility with future vehicles.
If you’ve never owned an OBDII scan tool, these things should be in every toolkit.
A scan tool enables you to read OBD II diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) from the on-board computers of 1996 and newer cars and light trucks.
This gives you the ability to quickly determine the cause of the “Check Engine” light.

The PocketScan lets you clear the trouble codes and turn off the light. Sometimes the errors are minor and that’s the end of the story.
Sometimes, of course, you need to make repairs to be assured that the “check engine” light will be gone for good.
