My mom told me about these a couple of years ago and now we are hooked. Every time my kids have friends camping with us they want to make them. You will need a square sandwich cooker and a hot campfire with some nice coals. There are five of us so we have 2 irons to make it go a little faster.
Ingredients-
Bread (we prefer white or wheat, but any kind that isn’t too thin will work)
Butter
Cans of your favorite pie filling (cherry, apple, blueberry, etc)
Brown sugar ( if using apple pie filling)
1- Butter two slices of bread. Put one slice butter side down in one side of the iron. (This is just like making a grilled cheese sandwich)
2- Add about 1/2 cup of your favorite pie filling. If using apple sprinkle some brown sugar on top of the filling. Try not to get too close to the edges of the bread.
3- Put the other slice of bread butter side up and then close the iron, making sure it is locked.
4- Put over the coals until golden brown. The time will vary and you will get a feel for it after awhile. It’s easier to make these when you have a little daylight so you can open it and check for browning. Check them every couple of minutes until you get the hang of it.
5- They will be hot, so have a plate handy to put them on when they come off of the fire. I use a knife and fork to eat mine because I don’t want to wait for it to cool off !
We liked them so much that we started getting creative and making lunch sandwiches too. Tuna melts, bologna and cheese, even peanut butter and jelly. You make them the same way as the pies….you just change the filling.

No one talked about using them for breakfast. fill them with egg (whole or beat up and either sausage or bacon (precook the meat). A pocket pie and a cup of coffee. You can buy the bacon pre cooked. We even do them at home over the gas stove burner. Like another poster we first were shown how by a friend in PA Dutch country.

I belong to the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) and use to go to their conventions in Oshkosh, Wisconsin for many years starting the late 1960’s. We were camped on the lakes over from Oshkosh in 1970 and were introduced to one of these pie makers by a young couple from Pennsylvania. We just had to have one and this couple on their trip to Florida the following winter brought one by our house and camped in our driveway for the night. It is still working. And we live in North Carolina.

We call them mountain pies! I love putting apple, caramel sauce, and cinnamon in them and then sticking some ice cream on top. You can also make them with pizza sauce, pepperoni, and cheese or with peanut butter and marshmallows. Mmmmmmm! This is making me want to go camping!

Another fun campfire treat are “dough boys”
What you do is get some of the pillsbury dough used for crescent rolls..etc. and wrap it around a wooden dowel or a stick..etc. sometimes we even use those forks that are used for marshmallows.
Cook over the fire until “golden brown” the roll will slide off nice and easy. We then fill the opening with some of the squeeze butter and sprinkle on some cinnamon..YUMMY

Growing up, we called them Turkey Toast-tites. Now, as an adult I add other things other than the turkey … but the TTT are the best. You put Turkey, stuffing & gravy in them … wow! It is the best use for left-over Turkey. Thanks for the other idea options … think we’ll have to try them this weekend.

Try some good old peanut butter (crunchy is great!) and jelly in the pie maker as well. My grandkids love peanut butter, bananas and cinnamon too. Delicious! I have also spread a bit of cream cheese on bread and added fresh blueberries for a special treat which everyone loves. But I think the favorite in our family is graham cracker crumbs, marshmallow creme and milk chocolate frosting from a can spread on the bread, which is our take on s’mores. The sky is the limit with these pie makers. Have fun!

Around here they are called mountain pies–the best makers if you can find them are the round ones–they cut the crusts off and are alot better—want a treat do some provalone cheese and some pizza sauce with sliced pepperoni for pizza ones or ham and cheese—instead of butter it’s alot easier to spray the inside of the makes with Pam cooking spray–and for the pie filling ones take along some powdered sugar to roll them in when they come out of the cookers makes them more fattening but that means it’s more good
