Once you’ve made the decision to buy a new RV, there are countless options to consider when contemplating which RV to purchase. Here is a quick checklist of things to consider first. Also be sure to know the differences between the different classes of RVs (Class A, Class B, Class C and Super C), including the Towables, such as the Fifth Wheel and Travel Trailers (including hybrids, pop-ups and truck campers). Familiarize yourself with each kind, while narrowing down your search to the ones you like the best. Check out these listings to view the various types of RVs and the approximate cost of each class. This type of research is critical and will prove to be a helpful guide for buying a new RV.
Once you have done your research and decided which RV will best suit your needs, its time to begin negotiations for your top choice. Going to the dealership during a special event or during the off season are your best opportunities to get the most for your money. Obtaining a low interest rate and the lowest price possible are critical when buying a new RV, considering how sizable an investment it is.
Here are some things to consider before agreeing on a price:
- Find out the warranties for your top choices (usually 1-2 years)
- Decide on which options you want customized to suit your individual needs
- Frequent as many RV shows and dealerships as possible so you’re informed in your decisions
- Order online brochures and visit various manufacturers websites
- Know how many you will need it to sleep, how often you will be using it, and your favorite floor plans and slide out options
- Consider the truck you will tow it with or whether you want it to be Gas or Diesel powered
- Know that factory installed options are more affordable than installing things after purchasing
- Make sure the RV you choose has an air conditioner
- If you like to cook, ensure the one you choose has ample counter space, larger refrigerator, stove oven, and microwave
- Choose an RV with standard equipment included vs one with extra cost add-on options
- Ensure you get the largest propane tank size, Spare tire, tinted safety glass, “fantastic fan,” and a 6 (or 10) gallon size DSI electric/propane water heater
- Visually inspect the RV closely to check for craftsmanship and quality (without the sales person there preferably)
Congratulations on making an educated decision on which RV to buy. It’s common given the fun nature of these vehicle to dive into this process head first. But when buying a new RV, follow the steps above and you will not only enjoy your new home, you’ll eliminate the chance of the dreaded buyer’s remorse.

Buy it used. We bought Itasca Meridian 10/2013. Had some minor glitches like passenger window shade was taped up. Here we are May/2014. Things still not completely repaired – counter top crack, etc. Oh, we bought from Camping World in St Augustine FL
