What is a Trailerite you may ask? Well…if you don’t know about the movie, “The Long, Long Trailer” with Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, then you don’t know about being a Trailer-ite! Today, I want to talk about this movie and a couple others that have that camping theme. 
The Long, Long Trailer is about a newlywed couple where Tacy, played by Lucille Ball convinces her fiancé, Nicky, played by Desi Arnaz that they could buy a trailer called the ‘Bungalette’ and they could use it to travel from California to Colorado. The Bungalette brochure shows a spacious living space which convinces Nicky that it might not be a bad idea.
The fun really begins when they go to….yep….a camping show! They look at the Bungalette and it turns out that the trailer of her dreams is just too small. Then, it happens…she sees the trailer that will do the trick! It is called the ‘New Moon’ which incidentally was built at the New Moon Homes trailer factory in Alma, Michigan and it was 32 feet long and sold for $5,345. The movie follows Tacy and Nicky through their travels and all the fun that any RVer will be able to relate to in some way or another. I would love to give you the whole plot, but I think it would be best for you to experience this treasure yourself! Then you can call yourself a Trailerite! Another classic camping movie is also a Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz classic called “Forever Darling”. Now, this one can be considered a follow-up of the “Long, Long Trailer” with mixed reviews as to its quality. I found this movie enjoyable and I think you will too. This time, Susan (Lucille Ball) and Lorenzo (Desi Arnaz) are dealing with their 5 year marriage crisis. The fire just isn’t there and so Susan, with the help of a guardian angel, played by James mason, goes in the wilderness with Lorenzo (a scientist) to test a new bug repellent he invented. Once again, we are with Lucy and Desi in a camping theme, but this time, instead of a nice 32 foot trailer, it’s all primitive camping. That’s probably enough for me to say on this….you can just imagine the fun it would be to watch these two in that setting! I will give you one hint; a self inflatable boat!
Move forward to present day and we find the movie “RV” with Robin Williams. I actually do like this movie, but I have mixed feelings because my non-camping friends have decided to stereotype us based on this movie. I can’t tell you how many people have asked me if I have seen this movie. 
Once I get passed that, I’m okay with this movie. Ultimately, I feel it is a must see for RVers. The plot has Bob Munro (Robin Williams) desperate to get away with his family for some real family time while still trying to get his job done for his….well…not so great boss. I felt sorry for poor ole’ Bob in this movie, but in the end things turn out just fine.
These movies would be great movies to have on hand while in your RV, Travel Trailer, 5er, pup, etc where you carry a television. They would be great rainy day movies!
Now, I know there are others and I purposely avoided the horror/thriller movies. My focus today is more towards family fun. Perhaps, one day, I will write about some of the others….perhaps during a certain October holiday!

The Long Long Trailer is one of my favorite “feel good” movies. I have a vintage copy of Clinton Twiss book on which the film was based. Some of the situations in the film were directly form the book, others were created with Lucy and Desi’s talents in mind. Many of the books characters were combined into only a few for the film. The opening of the Trailer Show is my favorite scene. I’ve been to so many of those in real life.
OK, all you old trailer buffs, the “Bungalette” trailer featured at the trailer show was not a real make in the 1950s. What real trailer make was used as the fictitious “Bungalette” in the film. All product badging is disguised. Does anyone recognize it’s true identity?

I was born in 1952 and my parents had just purchased a New Moon trailer much like that in the movie of same name. Ours was silver and yello in color and it was 8’wide x 46′ long. It had picture windows that wrapped around the LR and 2 BRs. The kitchen had all the amenities of today..lazy susan, pull out drawers, pantry, vegetable drawers, and much storage. I remember it fondly.

How can you bring up RV movies and then not mention “Lost In America”?
It is difficult to say the number TWENTY TWO without hearing Julie Haggerty’s voice repeating the chant, hoping roulette pays her off. Albert Brooks introduced us to the dream of being Fulltime RVers at a younger than silver age, showing how the “nest egg” can carry us anywhere we would like.
Kudos for the “Forever Darling” reference, you may have doubled the movie’s all time viewship, I heard it made it to 60 people now.

I can still remember watching the Long, Long, Trailer and how much we laughed about it. Seeing Desi back into his mother-in-laws drive and take out her overhang still brings us to tears, laughing. I have a sister and brother-in-law who have had similar adventures with their motorhome, so much so, that we have nicknamed them Lucy and Desi! Thanks for reminding us of how much fun we had watching that movie so many years ago. Lynne

looks like your subject is very popular with RVers. Having grew up in the ’40s/50s I lived in those trailers and trailer camps. The term RV or RV parks wasn’t used back then as its a modern term. Those 8′ wide x 30′ + trailers were house trailers which later in the ’60s transformed (grew) into our modern moblehomes. And outgrew the trailer coach/house trailer name. Those old house trailers were towable with panel trucks/big sedans/station wagons/few folks had pickups back then. Those trailers/trailer coachs didn’t come with holding tanks/12v converters and its wiring systems/LP frig/RV type plumbing fixtures/etc. What I remenber and always disliked about some of those old trailers was some came equiped with coal oil heaters. It was my job to make sure it was filled before going to school. Lots of us kids smelled like coal oil at school. Some came with butane/propane tanks which was much cleaner burning with no mess. My dad worked for Spartan Trailer Coaches from the time they started after WW II till they closed in ’60. I worked there the last year they were open as a HS senior just helping with the last units comming off the line. Graduated in ’60 and started to work for a trailer manufactor that Redman bought out. We made all aluminum units for oil/RR/etc companies that they used world wide at construction sites or oil exlporation. Those were simply times but hard times as those trailer camps were poor folks, not just folks out enjoying nature or their favorite RV experience. Camping was done with camping trailers back then as they were still single axle/short units. Thanks………… JIMNLIN on RV.net

Since our RV was undoubtedly overloaded, like most RVs, my late husband and I joked about the “rocks” we carry in our RV- based on the concept from the movie, “The Long, Long Trailer.” My “rocks” are books. Bill’s were tools.
George and I howled while watching “RV.” While over the top, we could see many typical insidents from RVing.
