You can’t go any further north and east in Ohio than Conneaut, built around the confluence of Conneaut Creek and Lake Erie. While the origins of the town name in the Native American Seneca language are murky, for outdoorsmen, Conneaut translates into world-class walleye and perch fishing. Hunters prowl the Conneaut Wildlife Area across the Pennsylvania border in adjacent State Game Lands Number 314.

Lakeview Park has sandy beaches enlivened with beach glass and long sunsets over Lake Erie. The Port of Conneaut Bird Observation Platform Area provides several perches to observe the area’s many avian visitors. Winter brings ice fishing in Conneaut Harbor and sledding above the frozen lake in Township Park.
Elsewhere in town, early resident David Cummins built an octagon house on Liberty Street in 1860 that is now an historic attraction. Another landmark building is Kipi Hall, once a Finnish gathering place and now home to the Conneaut Community Art Center. The Ashtabula Arts Center presents theater, dance and music performances on a stage modeled after New York’s Lincoln Center. An education in Ohio’s woodlands is on the curriculum at the Conneaut Outdoor Learning Center.
