Devil’s Tower is a national monument located in the northeastern corner of Wyoming. It’s one of those road trip icons of the all-natural variety. If you are driving into the state from South Dakota (say, from visits to Wall Drug and Mt. Rushmore) it beckons. It’s located about a half hour off the main interstate highway. It merits the detour.
If you have ever watched Steven Speilberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind, you probably recognize Devil’s Tower. In the movie it served as a meeting place for aliens. It was a brilliant choice of location, because there’s something truly otherworldly about this place. It’s a mountain of rock that looks like no mountain you’ve ever seen…

You really make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this matter to be actually something that I think I would never understand. It seems too complicated and very broad for me. I am looking forward for your next post, I will try to get the hang of it!

Superb blog! Do you have any suggestions for aspiring writers? I’m planning to start my own blog soon but I’m a little lost on everything. Would you suggest starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for a paid option? There are so many choices out there that I’m completely confused .. Any suggestions? Thanks a lot!

Sean, Thank you for the courtesy. My first wife was half Lakota half cherokee. Her dad was full blooded lakota, ist generation of the res. Although the marriage did not last my love and admiration for native american has never faded.

Man-o-man. I cannot believe the crap that people write in about such a wonderful, mystical place as the Tower. Do they not read the Indian beliefs and understand anything? This is a place for all to ENJOY, not quibble about religion, “magic” “spooky” or any thing other than exactly what it is.. An ancient volcanic tube that has been eroded to reveal it’s true identity. Wonder about the feelings you get when you look at it and it’s magnificence.).
There is no other as this. Period. Relax, enjoy the beauty of such an edifice. You will never see another.

Thanks @Bill for your comment – more videos to come! I am trying to steer clear of the Satanic potted meat, ha ha
@catches, Lakota is now subbed for Sioux 🙂
@Jerry, next time we will plan to camp overnight there. I bet it’s a special place to stay.

Spent 4 days there in 2008 – will include it again in our 2012 trip. The campground inside the park can hold a 40′ motorhome (dry camping) and it is so peaceful there. Nice short video Sean.

Sean, please drop the word sioux and replace it with the proper term of Lakota. Sioux is a generic white mans term that encompasses several of the plkains tribes such as the Lakotas, the Dakotas, the Black foot et al. Thank you.

I went to Devils Tower and I was duly impressed by the grandeur of the monument and when I walked the trail I was humbled by the prayer streams tied to bushes. And when I got back to the visitors center I spoke with a ranger whom I told that allowing climbers on the tower was the same as letting climbers on the national cathedral. He disappeared.

I enjoyed this video as I do ALL of them that you make. When I first discovered your blog site, I sat here for hours reading and watching. I am also very impressed that you remembered the Deviled Ham thing, ha. Take care and be safe on your travels.

Thanks Teri, I will accept “corny” – I’ve been called worse! LOL

Sean, you are corny (lol) but your documentary tour was great! This will definitely be on my list when visiting WY.

Thanks Ralphie — if you’ll read the full article (posted on LongLongHoneymoon.com) or watch the full video you’ll discover that I agree with your point.

Holy cow, what malarky is this. If you look at the history of this natural site, it is called the Bear Lodge by the indigenous people, or Indians. The negative, evil names are a creation of those who do not know. I have been there and it is was a very powerful, positive, spiritual experience. Let’s let go of this “evil” attitude.

Thanks Graddy, and good advice! We pulled up to the visitor’s center, made the loop, and pointed our rig towards the exit. So, we ended up parking a short hike down the road.

I agree. It is awesome. You can see it way before you get there. It is best, however, to leave your RV at the campground & drive up in your toad. We didn’t do that. We drove directly to the tower pulling our toad with our 30 ft. Holiday Rambler. At the top of the road(foot of tower) is a visitor center & very limited parking. Had to find a place to turn around & drive back up twice to find a spot. This was September. There is a foot trail that goes all the way around the base of the tower. While walking this we could hear far away voices. We looked up & could see climbers on the tower on all sides! Fantastic. Can’t wait to go back.
