An inexpensive tech tip…Spring into action.

We got tired of having our weight-distributing hitch spring bars laying on the ground, so we devised a solution using four spring clips, which can be purchased at any hardware store.

For less than $10, we now store the bars along the A-frame, off the ground and out of the way.

Check out hardware stores–spring clips should be available there.

Would be nice if contributors would identify where one can source the item(s) or part(s).

Not exactly the same but consider these (“coated” clips) from : http://nz.rs-online.com/web/p/spring-clips/0507832/

At first blush this is a great idea and I’m glad that it works for you. That being said, those looking at this post should be aware that many manufacturers will void your warranty on your chassis if you drill into it. If your RV or travel trailer or five or is older and this is not an issue I would still be cautious about drilling holes in a frame.

But didn’t that mean you had to drill into the drawbar and thus weaken it?

There is absolutely no way that a couple of holes that size would weaken the frame, seriously, no worries.

I put mine in a soft zip gun case and store them in my storage compartment so they can’t be stolen.

Go to Amazon.com, and search for “RV water heater cover.” They have several for different brands of water heaters.

If you are talking about the water heater louvered door, check with a camping world store.

I usually just lay mine across the A-frame between the gas bottles and battery box.

You may need to to a sheet metal shop and have one made.
I had to have one made for a pop up that had hand lighting also
and the wind keep blowing it out.

Good idea Robert, however I have been unable to source the “spring clips” from any hardware, automotive parts, home improvement or any other kind of store in British Columbia, Canada. No one has ever seen anything like it. The closest item is made to hang up broom handles and light items like that.
Can you send me a link to the website of a hardware store in your area that has these clips, then I can contact them and get them shipped to me.

Love that idea! I trust our felloww campers but you just never know who might see the bars as a good source of scrap metal. Love the idea of locking then. Thanks!

Nice idea but too easily stolen without some means of locking them.

Looks like a neat idea. However drilling holes in the trailer frame is not necessarily a good idea. You could be weakening the frame.

I use a simpler and more secure approach. Lay the spring bars across the A Frame with the chains hanging on the same side. Then use a padlock to attach the spring bar chains and one of the trainer’s safety chains together.

This gets the bars off the ground and ensures they can not be stolen.

What an excellent idea! I travel frequently by myself pulling a 17 footer and am always throwing the bars under the trailer and this is a great way to store them at a more manageable height so I don’t have to kneel down in the rocks/dirt/mud. Thanks for the tip!

Also, do you know of any where I can purchase a vent cover for my water heater? It has to be hand lit and the wind is constantly blowing it out. I can’t find anyone that manufactures them.
