My husband and I purchased an new 1969 pickup camper. First time out we headed to the lake. We got parked and the rain started–just pouring down throughout the night. Next moring still pouring, We ate our breakfast what do we do–no reading material was put in the camper. I had lined the camper shelves with newspapers, we removed the shelving and read the papers and headed back to town. Since then after loading the food in the camper comes the reading material. I also leave books in the RV also comic books for the children. Our son asked me what ever happened to the comic books we had in the pickup camper in 1969???? So do I.

My husband and I watch garage sales and flea markets for paper backs. When we are through with them, we either leave them at a rec room at the parks, or take them home and have our local union hall take them to the Veterans Homes and Hospitals for the Veterans to enjoy. Also, for the Veterans, when we travel by car or/and our friends that travel and use hotels, we have them save the soap, shampoo, and conditioner and lotions that are in the hotels. We collect them and take them to our local union to take to the Veterans. We also take our magazines when we are through with them. Just the least we can do for all the Veterans that have served our country and made it possible for us to travel and enjoy our freedom. !!!!!

I have books with me in the car, now the RV and all over the house. If not books, then magazines. We put some old Readers Digest we had read years ago in the RV last year when we went on a 3 week trp. That was one of the things my husband and I found we had in common was the love of reading.

When we travel (especially after we quit smoking), we even carry a book to read into a resturant to read while we are waiting for our food. Especially if I have had to drive in pouring rain trying to find a safe place to pull in. We use that time to unwind so lunch tastes good. We have been married almost 37 years and neither one of us is very talkative first thing in the morning. We read the paper, books, etc while having our tea, coffee, breakfast and even the cats know not to bother us for at least 30 minutes. They have learned how to sit in our lap or near us, let us read and still get petted by us.

I would go crazy if I was someplace and did not have something to read. I tried reading on-line and can only tolerate it about 2 hours before getting a headache. But I can read regualar print material for hours. Books on tape put me to sleep.

I cannot begin to understand anyone going “camping” be it with a tent or a 40′ Pusher that would even think of traveling without reading material. It doesn’t sunshine everyday, and not all the areas have radio or tv. (bad words: tv). You always need something to read. Preferably a good book !!!
Do go to book sales to load up on reading matter. Library book sales are some of the best. Hardbound for home and the paperbacks for travel. Less weight and space. And you can trade for other books after you have read everything. Don’t trade book for book. Trade stack for stack. That way you get the same amount of reading material. Traveling in Europe for ten years is how we found this to wook. Even the English were suprised.

I never had a pickup camper but I have been stuck in the rain (for days) as you were. It is not a fun experience but it sounds like the perfect situation for either an Amazon Kindle or an iPad.

You can have a lot of reading material in a small package and you can even get more if you run out.
