In 1969, a blended family of five kids and two parents set off on a camping trip in their new pop-up trailer. Sure, it sounds like an episode of the Brady Bunch, but Mary Capo’s very real recollection of her clan’s fun-filled RV adventures was the top vote-getter in our RV Memory contest, held in celebration of this year’s centennial of the manufactured RV.

Mary Capo’s travel tale was one of five finalists selected from hundreds of submissions sent in to RV.net and voted on throughout September. Congratulations go to Mary, who wins 100 gallons of fuel. Mary and her husband have moved up from their original pop-up trailer to a 40-foot motorhome, so the prize should come in handy. Here’s the story of the Capo bunch, along with a groovy photo of Mary and her husband from back in the day. <link to Family Fun copy>

Special mention goes to runner-up Chris Baur, an avid RVer who developed an interest in recreational vehicles as a kid growing up in the 1970s with two sisters and a single mom in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn, New York. As Chris tells it, before his adolescence, he’d collected nearly “every brochure from every trailer, motorhome and RV accessory manufacturer in the country.” Now president of consulting and technical services for Hughes Aerospace Corporation, Chris recalls his family’s 1976 trip in a rental RV.
