Galloway is the largest of New Jersey’s 566 townships. The casino towers and world famous boardwalk of Atlantic City are mere minutes away, but visitors can also opt for the quiet trails slipping through tidal salt marshes in the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge or the Port Republic Wildlife Management Area.

Galloway remains largely rural. While Atlantic City was betting its tourism dollars on gambling, Galloway lured visitors with Historic Smithville and Village Greene, a shopping complex of millponds and steam-powered railroads. Grapes are a favorite crop here, and the Renault Winery has been open to the public since 1870 as the Garden State’s oldest existing winery. Lake Fred, on the campus of Stockton College, is a gorgeous Pinelands pond ideal for hikes and turtle spotting.
The Brigantine beaches offer ocean sunrises, sunbathing and long strolls on soft sand. At the North Brigantine State Natural Area, beachgoers can surf fish and romp with their dogs. Golfers can take their best drives to the historic Stockton Seaview Golf Club, home to the Shoprite LPGA Classic, and the highly regarded Galloway National Golf Club.
