A few weeks ago, I wrote about how we decided to camp in the back yard. That actually turned out to be a great time. Since then, I have been trying to cook up some creative camping excursions that would be close to home and would not be a huge burden to do.
When we camp, we enjoy state parks or a state park setting. We do not expect to have the campground entertain us. Relaxation is our goal.
We already have a great campground at my parents place in Kentucky which we will be visiting during the Labor Day weekend. It is fantastic but it is 450 miles. I believe that 100 miles or less is a good goal to set for distance.
As I sit and brainstorm, an idea came to me. I wonder if people would be willing to ‘host’ campers. Of course, there would be logistical issues not to mention legal issues to sort out, but I would consider hosting someone passing through my area. I know my back yard makes a great campground.
The concept might be that people register their yard or driveway to host someone passing through. The things that they would provide are water and electricity.
I also thought of asking some other nearby relatives about camping on their property. I have an Aunt and Uncle that lives about 20 miles from me and they have a 100 acre farm. There is one really neat place on their land that if my truck and trailer can get to it, it would really be a nice place to camp. It is up on a hill and there is an overlook with a steep drop down to a flood plain of a creek that passes through their property. I would have to boondock because there are no utilities at that location, but I would give it a try.
It looks like I will have an opportunity to camp at my job in October. I am an IT (Information Technology) guy and this coming October is going to be nutty and many of us will have to be at work almost all weekend for two weekends. My company will put people up in a hotel when these things happen, but I think I might bring my Travel Trailer to the parking lot and camp out there.

Go for it that sounds like very good camping to me.Wish I had the chance to camp on 100 acres.I have a fithwheel that’s set up up solar and would like every chance to dry camp that I can.

My aunt and uncle had a 30′ trailer parked in their drive way. Our family of 4 used to sleep in it when we went to visit for Thanksgiving. This summer we took our camper to my daughters place in Austin Tx. She lives on several acers. We had electricity and water. We also parked under a large canope for shade. It’s a good idea to stay at friends or relatives, but I think the key word here is space. You have to have room.

I really like your idea of “hosting” campers. The Mennonites have done something similar this by opening their homes to others around the US.
It is called Mennonite Your Way.
A group like this for campers would be wonderful. One thing we do when visiting on Mennonite Your Way homes is to leave a small gift from our home town – a coffee mug, a spoon or ….

When we’re not camping at a park or on our friends wooded property.I use our MH to go to the dirt races near our house.Its a bit of a drive (6 miles) but I manage.That way I can enjoy an adult beverage or two and not have to drive. Love it!

Our motor home has served many purposes in the past 30 or more years. During breaks in teaching schedules I traveled all over New England offering training seminars for working mechanics. The MH was my motel. Recently when my mother passed away in another state we camped in my cousins back yard. The week before labor day we will be camped next to another relitives cottage on Lake Winnipisakee in New Hampshire. And we often use the MH down on our own property by the river and backyard camp.
