A quick post today to bring this to everyone’s attention. Reno Nevada has started enforcing the overnight parking restriction that has been a local ordinance since 1996. Over the years there has been sporadic enforcement; although, several casinos made accomodations for RV travelers, especially those of us who are serious players. It seems even this has come to an end.
Unlike Laughlin, RVers are a tiny fraction of the business for most Reno casinos. The few casinos in the area that do substantial business with RVers are outside the city limits, or have an RV park, or both.
Here are links to a couple of news articles in the Las Vegas Sun and KTVN Reno channel 2
If you decide to write to Reno officials I recommend avoiding threats of boycot, and be calm and rational. You might appeal for the rights of property owners (not RVers). In Reno (unlike Laughlin) our best plan is probably to wait and hope that active enforcement stops and casinos will once again allow us to park.
Even with these events the Reno area is still on my “friendly” list. There are commercial parks, casinos with RV parks, and casinos outside the city limits where overnighting is still OK.

The Victorian RV Park located near Downtown Sparks is a great place to stop while visiting the Reno area. They have the nicest grounds of any of the RV properties in the area and the location is ideal for travellers looking to participate in the many events that Sparks offers including Hot August Nights, Rib Cookoff, and Street Vibrations.

Hi Bill,
In most cities the issue of parking on residential streets and of parking on business property are separate. I can’t recall if the Reno ordinance applied to both or not, but our focus was how it impacted casinos that allow us to park overnight on their private property.
When a city has an ordinance and decides to enforce it on casinos it’s generally in response to some specific complaint and things return to normal (ordinance ignored) after a few months or a year.
For questions about on-street parking I would call the city, either police or code enforcement. The street is city property, not private property.
Happy travels and good luck in the casinos!
Bill
Why is there no update for NOW? Everything is from three years ago, but what about now? I’m heading to Reno to visit relatives, and I must park my motorhome on the street, since they live in an apartment complex. Am I going to be towed away? Ticketed? Fined?

Thanks for commenting Wendy. Here’s a link to that park for everyone: http://www.woodalls.com/a/01301_riversedge.html
I agree with you, the Reno area overall is still RV friendly. Verdi and Sparks have both casino overnight parking and several commercial RV parks. The actual effect of the ordinance is fairly narrow.

RENO is still a very welcoming place for the RV folks. Try River’s Edge RV Park in Sparks, which overlooks the truckee river. It has a great, friendly staff, and all the amenities you need.
PLUS-SHUTTLES TO THE CASINOS that cannot allow the RV’s to park in their lots. Reno is still a great place to go!

i appreciated Mac bringing us up to date. We campers are the last of the “respectful” generation and we just don’t want to go where we are not appreciated.
While I respect that casinos have to maximize their facilities for the sake of income – just wait a while and in this coming recession they will be begging for our dollars again.

I’ve seen auto drivers urinating while standing by there car. Should they ban cars too? What the truck stop mayor said about the financial impact, namely “wouldn’t amount to the cost of a light bulb” in reference to the lack of RV business, is not friendly to me. They may well be on your list, but they are certainly a big “No fly zone” in my book. And that will include when they re-instate, which they will, RV parking over night. Replace the “Truck stop owner with the big mouth” and I may look at it again. There is no excuse for this event.

Heading to Corpus Christi area for for the first time and would like input on parks there and up toward Rockport. We like amenities but also like quiet, beaches, palms, fishing and other water activities. Any help is appreciated. Newbies last winter so still learning. Thanks, Ron

I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT SOME PEOPLE ARE SO RUDE AS TO URINATE ON A PUBLIC PARKING LOT. HOPE THEY NEVER PARK NEXT TO US.
HOW ABOUT WENDOVER NEVADA? IS THERE PARKING ALLOWED ON THEIR CASINO LOTS. WE HAVE NEVER GONE THAT WAY BUT ARE PLANNING ON VISITING THERE ON OUR WAY SOUTH THIS OCTOBER.

Here’s a quick follow up, another article that seems more complete than the first:

Also, note that in this article a spokesperson from John Ascuaga’s Nugget (located in neighboring Sparks, NV) said they now allow RV parking in a designated lot. They had previously eliminated RV overnighting.
