Camping in a Cast

I will start at the beginning, When I was 8 years old which was in the mid to late 60’s my bought our first camper which was a 16 foot Sierro Scotty. It was blue and white and dad pulled it with our Mercury Monteray. It was so cramped inside this camper with mom, dad, me & younger sis Lori, then dad had a roll up awning installed a few months later.

The following year when we camped mom, dad, and Lori slept inside. I slept outside under the awning in a lounger and sleeping bag. I so enjoyed those days of camping. On one of our trips we were at a campground, there was mom, dad, young sis, and then my sister Wanda who was the next up from me was also there with a boy friend in a tent.

There was a hill, half way down that hill it turned into sand. Many of us used to run down that hill and at the edge jump to see how far down in the sand we could land. One time I did it I had my legs straight instead of bent and when I landed it bent my knee backwards and broke my knee. It swelled up so large that my jeans was tight around my leg, mom and dad had gone into town. Lori went and got Wanda and she came and helped me back to the camper and sat me in the lounger. Just a few minutes later mom and dad got back and as soon as dad saw my jeans he cut them loose, then my parents took me to the hospital in which they drained the fluid and put a cast on and we returned to the campground for the remainder of the trip.

Camping in a cast was real interesting and boring at the same time, one good thing was I got a lot of attention from the girls in the campground.
