A Quiet Night in North Platte

Every summer as we travel, we seem to have occasion to spend at least one night in North Platte, NE. This happens because we are most often traveling to the southwest from our home in Wisconsin and North Platte looms as a natural stopping point either on our way out or on our way home. When we traveled this spring, without our camper, we stopped there on our way home. This summer, on our two week RV excursion west, we used it as our first night’s resting spot.

Holiday RV Park SignWhen planning our trip this past winter, and searching for an RV park in the North Platte area, we consulted Woodall’s listings and the Holiday RV Park and Campground jumped out at us as the place we’d most like to stay. With 90 sites available, the most typical site has 30 feet of space available and 70 have full hookups. The park boasts sparkling clean restrooms, a pool and free Wi-Fi, which was very appealing as we had hoped to be able to keep in touch with family and friends at home during our trip.

Camper at siteWe arrived about two hours later than planned, due to some unexpected vehicle problems; in spite of being reassured by our dealer that our Durango was rated to pull a much heavier load than our 18’ Trail-lite camper, even fully loaded, we had been near to overheating in the 100 degree temperatures the entire day. We had debated turning back, but chose instead to slow our pace and pull off if needed.

Restroom and showersDespite our late arrival we were welcomed warmly by the staff member on duty. He was friendly and explained where our pull-through site was located as well as the password for the Wi-Fi. The restrooms were indeed sparkling clean and the shower I took that night was absolutely delicious after 16 hours on the road. The restrooms had 6-8 showers each and they were never full!

While some of the sites appeared to be occupied for the entire season, many others were booked only for a night or two. Holiday RV Park poolIn spite of the fact that it was about filled to capacity, the park was blissfully quiet and peaceful the entire evening. After we set up, I quickly sent my stressed husband, who had been driving all day, over to the pool to decompress while I put together our stew for dinner. After dinner we took a walk around the park, then settled in to listen to a bit of relaxing music before turning in for the evening.

View of the campgroundAn added treat we discover is that each site has a dump station so we can dump our gray water before taking off in the morning, rather than having to drive around and maneuver to find the dump location. It was a nice feature we had not encountered before and a bit of a time saver. Even though we had only been out one night, it was important for us to dump the water as we needed to completely refill our water tank as we would be dry camping for the next four nights. Given the difficulties our vehicle had had with the towing the day before, it was crucial that we lighten our load as much as possible. Holiday RV Park made that easier than ever, contributing to our respite on the prairie! This is definitely a place we will be visiting again.

That’s a great suggestion. Will definitely let the dealer know. DO stop in North Platte, we make it a regular stop on our journeys west and back.

Sorry that you had problems with the load. Sometimes dealers prefer the one time sale rather than return customers. I definitely would let them know. Will keep that location as a possible stop when in that area.
