Keep an eye out for the pelicans that dot the shoreline—this is one of the best places to see them in the Southwest.

Burger buffs will be happy to know that Las Cruces is a stop on the Green Chile Cheeseburger Trail, a statewide string of bars and restaurants serving a Southwestern version of the famous sandwich. North of the city on State Road 52, you’ll find a series of ghost towns and abandoned churches that tell the compelling story of the area’s wild and woolly boomtown days.
