As one of the oldest cities in the U.S., Albuquerque serves up authentic Southwest experiences at every turn. Spanish heritage is on display in the Old Town neighborhood, where the adobe buildings, flamenco music and spicy cuisine captivate visitors. 3. Elephant Butte

145.5 miles, 1 hour, 55 minutes

All manner of watersports is at your fingertips in this lakeside refuge. Part of the largest state park in New Mexico, the reservoir holds a number of state fishing records, so this might be your chance to land the big one. Not in a competitive spirit? You can still sail or kayak all the nooks and crannies of the 200-plus miles of shoreline. Keep an eye out for the pelicans that dot the shoreline—this is one of the best places to see them in the Southwest.

4. Las Cruces

81.5 miles, 1 hour, 10 minutes

With 350 days of sunshine annually, you’re all but guaranteed to have the weather on your side while you explore the numerous offerings in what has been called a “dream town” for visitors. Burger buffs will be happy to know that Las Cruces is a stop on the Green Chile Cheeseburger Trail, a statewide string of bars and restaurants serving a Southwestern version of the famous sandwich. North of the city on State Road 52, you’ll find a series of ghost towns and abandoned churches that tell the compelling story of the area’s wild and woolly boomtown days.
