Military History
The National Infantry Museum has a collection of more than 70,000 artifacts from the last 240 years of American military history; from the Revolutionary War to the present. The museum focuses on the role of the U.S. Army Infantryman in securing the freedoms we all enjoy.
The National Civil War Naval Museum features vessels, uniforms, equipment and weapons used by the US Navy, from the North and South, and has the largest surviving Confederate warship, the CSS Jackson, as well as the wreckage of the CSS Chattahoochee. This Museum includes a timeline exhibit that takes you month-by-month through the war, showing various naval events.
Historic Westville
History buffs can start out by enjoying a visit to Historic Westville. Step back in time in this working 1850’s village.
Westville has four interpretive areas:
1. The Creek Indian Area conveys stories of the Creek people, their culture, and the lasting effects of their removal as a result of Westward expansion.
2. The Frontier Interpretive Area displays the way of life of settlers and the expansion of cotton.
3. The Rural Area exhibits the reliance on cotton and the cultures springing from resistance to the slave and sharecropping systems.
4. The Town Center shows crafts and trades of that time, as well as political and social life.
Visitors can walk through homes and, in most cases, experience what it was like to lie down on a rope bed or a straw-filled mattress or sit at a dining table of that period. You will see ‘old’ ways of doing things, which required much patience, time and skill.
Outdoor Adventures
Those who like to walk, bike or inline skate will enjoy Columbus Fall Line Trace, 11 miles of RR tracks converted to paved trails through the city. This trail runs from the 14th Street pedestrian bridge in Uptown Columbus to Psalmond Road in rural Midland. It follows the abandoned right-of-way of the Norfolk Southern Railroad. This trail joins the Chattahoochee Riverwalk, which runs along the banks of the Chattahoochee River, from the cotton mill village of Bibb City through downtown Columbus and on to Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center, near the drill fields of Fort Benning. Together, these two trails total a 26-mile trek.
