See a mind-blowing, real-life time capsule of frontier-era artifacts at the Arabia Steamboat Museum. The Arabia was carrying 200 tons of household goods to shops up and down the Missouri when it sank in 1856. Recently excavated, the displays of remarkably preserved artifacts are jaw-dropping. Check out high-button shoes, oil lamps, tools, children’s toys, furniture, clothing and more. It’s a snapshot of frontier life that you won’t find in any other museum.

“Toto, we’re not in Kansas anymore,” says Dorothy in the classic 1939 film, Wizard of Oz. Well, if you take this trip you’ll be in Kansas, so be sure to visit Wamego, the home of the world-famous Oz Museum and its more than 25,000 Oz artifacts and memorabilia. The Oz theme is quite influential — visit the town’s Oz Winery, Toto’s Tacoz and the Poppyfield Gallery. Visit in October and catch the annual OZtoberFEST celebration.
