My first experience in Camping came in 1957. My Father decided he wanted to get into camping. We had no equipment or rv. Since we were farmers dad used what we had for a vehicle, a stock truck. While mom and dad went to town to buy a couple of sleeping bags, coleman white gas stove, ice chest, and other items it was my job to clean out the back of the truck. This took me about 4 hours to clean with a hose, scraper, and barn broom. This wasn’t just the floor but the side racks also. Mom said if she was going to sleep in this it was going to be clean. What a job!!!!!.
We then put boards and plywood across the side racks for the 3 kids to sleep and a canvass over the top. Mom and dad got the extra mattress. We loaded up and away we went to the State Fair for 3 days. That is my first experience in camping.
