One of the seminars we taught at the Gypsy Journal Rally was one of our very favorite topics: “Creating Narrated slideshow movies with Photo Story 3” We have our routine and material down pat with this one, so my mind was free to wander a bit in getting prepared.
It dawned on me that since my Mom is with us it would be cool to show a sample Photo Story movie using pictures from my family’s RV travels in the 60s. RVing in Alaska, Mexico and Canada are popular topics in RV circles – and we did it in the 60s. So, I made sure my Mom was in the audience for this seminar and I quickly put together this little movie as part of our presentation:
To learn how to make your own narrated slideshow/movie, see our tutorials at: http://geeksontour.com/photostory.cfm
It’s SOOO easy! And, Photo Story is free, just like everything else we teach.

What a wonderful idea you have come up with, we live in Terrace BC which is in Canada just below the Alaska Panhandle and have ventured up to the Yukon and Alaska many times and all those fond memories and pictures are only with us. What you have done is share your memories and if I can figure out how to do the same I will do so. But at 70 years old high tech to me is a stapler but maybe I can get some assistance from younger folks around where I live.

Chris…
Ahhh the good old days… what is it that back then the parents all seemed to enjoy the RV traveling and had no problems pack the kids along. Todays young (about the age of our parents when we were packed in for miles) just don’t seem to have the adventure that our parents did. Their world is all about gadgets and necessary stuff that really make the world a complex place… with no time to just do their own thing.
I think we, that were brought up with parents that took us on adventures, resort back to looking at the times we had and today get that relaxed .. good time feeling… . Ya each adventure might have down’s but, then again back then as kids we were not into the nature thing, rather seeking out others to have the adventure with.. sort of people like us… sad to leave our local friends at home but, found new ones along the way that had moments in our lives…
Those that missed out on the adventures of their youth days… don’t know what great fun it is to be out traveling… and enjoying the simplicity of life.. most today are dreading travel.. and so the phrase.. are we their yet… is heard… why you need a computer, cell phone, text message’n etc or else your out of touch… wonder how we did it back then without all these complex .. really not so needed items as we think we need… and the cost of them too boot. Instead of sitting in the RV text’n or emailing known people.. without the gadgets… one would go outside.. walk and talk with others in the camp… gain new friends and dream of new adventures while taking advise from those that went before.
Ahhh the new modern age is not all that good for the social seems to be lacking … fear sets in and locked doors result. Paranoid? well… is that where the electronic gadgets are taking us??
Heck when the family took to the road.. getting their was half the fun… visiting.. ok and the other half coming home… and telling all about where, what and when things happened… why even the car breaking down was a expected adventure back then… developed (as we improvised) me into the engineer I am today… recycling was not the word.. no a visit to the local junk yard.. meeting and talking with strangers…. figure’n out what you needed ….search for that item that could be adapted… borrowing the welding torch or arc welder, tools… and going at it… so that when done… the RV, car, trailer was “better built” … all these things made your adventures.. and even though we didn’t know it at the time (14/15 yr old) really prepared you for life and its recycling adventures….. so you can adapt, improvise and overcome its problems. (why just look at your dad.. he need a better way to get around… so he learned how to fly and got a plane… problem solved through necessity… which causes us to do thing…huh…
Camera.. to take pictures.. if you were lucky and somewhat rich… no… more the memories kept between the pages of our mind is what it became.
We are still looking for a good way to take the old 8 mm movies… and put them into the computer.. we so wanted to get the P’s voice on the thing too before they passed away… but, time got away and we missed it…
Then again the grandkids today don’t seem to care about adventures of the past… in the’re clouded electronic fast paced world… your lucky if they remember you if your not on facebook or texter… saddly its turned into a materialistic.. he who has the most.. wins .. world…
… and that is why I think RV’n for the young today is not happening… and as it goes so also will the abilities of our youth… and the nation.

When I was quite young, my father converted an old school bus and used it to take our family from Ohio to Miami Florida, looking for a better job. I was too young to know what was going on, but my older brothers and sisters tell a story about the time that the bus spare tire bounced out of its holder onto the road and my father did not notice it. My mother, who was driving behind the bus, in our car, did notice and stopped to pick up the tire by herself. I only wish I had a movie of that episode. 🙂

Chris:
On another subject, I downloaded Live Writer, and got two other programs.
Is there a location where I can download Live Writer, without Messenger, etc.?
I will mention this item in my next seminar.
thanks,

Thank you for the great idea… this will make a great digital scrapbook tip as well. Can’t wait to combine this with all our travel scrapbook pages and make some wonderful video CD slideshows.
