I came across this video by Pull-Rite about the hazards of mounting a hitch behind the truck axle, and thought it to be valuable information. Here’s the scoop:
This video takes a look at the more radical ideas that some people think might be a solution for towing 5th wheel trailers with a short bed truck. Mounting a hitch behind the truck axle, or changing the towing pivot point to behind the axle, creates unstable, unsafe, and dangerous towing characteristics. No knowledgeable RVer, RV Dealer, or Hitch Installer would suggest or consider these options. Moving the towing pivot point behind the truck axle induces dangerous trailer sway, and eliminates the advantages inherent to 5th wheel towing – with the trailer now having a negative effect on the safety, stability, and handling due to cross winds, passing trucks, and unexpected maneuvers. Safe handling speeds will be significantly reduced.

I understand a fifth wheel has different dynamics than a TT but maybe the origin of all this has to do with how TT’s are towed (bumper) and the seemingly insatiable desire for pickup tow vehicles that have extended, dual or even triple cabs (custom) and short beds. I had a short bed in 1968 and wouldn’t even consider another one. When my daughter shows up and talks about her “truck”–a Ford Escape–I cringe. It isn’t a truck in any fashion what so ever. Even my full sized pickup, reg cab, side tool boxes, ladder rack good for a ton, is a toy at the truck stop compared to 18 wheelers. Blowing off steam—–Thor

Taking the time to understand safe mounting practices is imperative to the enjoyment of your fifth wheel, Use our trailer hitch selection guide and accompanying “how to” instructions to make it easy and safe for your summer. Great blog, guys, thanks!!

I pulled a fiver with a short wheelbase truck and solved the dilemma by not only having an extended pin box installed on the trailer, but went one step farther. I had the trailer converted to a gooseneck hitch and had a fold down ball mounted in the truck bed. No big fifth wheel to have in the bed and about double (25,000 lb. !!) the towing capacity. It was a little harder to line up come hook up time, but there’s no side-to-side bind to deal with. Great set up.
