Morgantown

Home to West Virginia University since 1867, this spirited college town boasts stunning natural landscapes, sporting events and a lively nightlight scene – everything you need for a fun-filled getaway.

Back to school

You don’t have to be a student to go to West Virginia University. Watch the Mountaineers sink three-pointers at WVU Coliseum and score touchdowns on Mountaineer Field. If art is more your thing, check out the stunning collection of paintings, sculptures and ceramics inside the Art Museum on campus. Finish your visit with a stroll through gardens and old-growth forest in the university-owned Earl L. Core Arboretum.

Rip-roaring rapids

Morgantown is your destination for whitewater rafting. Conquer class three and higher rapids in Cheat Canyon, Elk Creek, Teter Creek and other action-packed waterways. You can join a group tour with skilled guides or do a self-guided expedition if you’re a seasoned paddler. Beneath the water’s surface is a whole lot of catfish, bass, trout and bluegill. Grab your bait and tackle and snag an epic catch from Cheat Lake, Dixon Lake and Little Sandy Creek.

Dramatic mountain vistas

The sights are unbelievable in Coopers Rock State Forest. The Raven Rock Trail quickly reveals spectacular views of Cheat River Canyon, while the Virgin Hemlock Trail brings you to a 300-year-old hemlock grove. Mountain biking, rock climbing and camping can all be done after admiring the scenery. Licensed hunting and fishing are also permitted in the forest. You’ll find more epic vistas in Dorsey’s Knob Park – just head to the top of Sky Rock peak for fantastic photo opportunities of Monongalia County.

Night on the town

It’s time to hit the town when the sun goes down. Stop by Chestnut Brew Works or Mountain State Brewing Company for a round of craft beers. Looking for a bite to eat? Locals will steer you in the direction of Black Bear Burritos, Tailpipes Burgers and Dirty Bird. Spend the rest of your evening watching live bands at 123 Pleasant St. or dancing at clubs like HQ and Code Bar. You can even belt out your favorite tunes at the Back Door’s karaoke party if you’re feeling up to it.
