Sandusky

Ride a coaster and reel in a catch in an amusement mecca

Summertime is the right time in Sandusky, Ohio, home to some of America’s most spectacular waterparks, roller coasters and beachfront vistas. Tourists descend on the family-friendly destination on the shores of Lake Erie and on the islands just offshore every year to enjoy festivals, fishing and boating galore. Combining a small-town feel with a wide menu of adventure, Erie is a surefire hit for all ages.

America’s Coolest Coasters

Home to some of the premier roller coasters on the planet, Cedar Point Amusement Park, located on a peninsula that juts into the lake, has earned a reputation as a mecca for thrill-seekers. Not for the faint of heart, Valravn is the park’s newest white-knuckle ride, standing out as the tallest, fastest and longest dive coaster in the world. The park also is home to four other coasters surpassing 200 feet in height; no wonder Cedar Point is among the most-visited seasonal parks in the country. But with 71 total rides to choose from, there’s plenty of fun to go around. When summer temperatures soar, visitors can head down the road to Kalahari Waterpark, Ohio’s largest indoor water park. The facility also boasts a spa center and mini golf to keep you busy.

Round and Round

Seeking more sedentary pursuits? There’s the Merry-Go-Round Museum, which showcases historic carousels that boast world-class craftsmanship and iconic style. The most famous horses on display at the museum are often exhibited around the world; some have made holiday stops at the White House. Visit with caution, though — a few of the oldest models are rumored to be haunted, and guests have even heard footsteps and children’s laughter in the museum’s halls during off hours! For more history, follow the Marblehead Peninsula to its tip; here stands the Marblehead Lighthouse, the oldest lighthouse in continuous operation on the United States

Lake Erie Shores and Islands

Wild for Walleye

The options for recreation on the water are plentiful. A relaxing float or fishing trip down the scenic Sandusky River is a popular pastime, and the nearby trails are great for bird-watching. For the chance at a big catch, hook up with a charter in town to fish this coastal stretch of Lake Erie known as the “walleye capital of the world.” Other fun diversions include golf, wine tasting, island hopping and zip lining. Take a day trip out to beautiful Kelleys Island for even more water fun.

After all the excitement, wind down with a chocolate-making class and some delicious homemade truffles at one of the area’s premier sweet shops, Tre Sorelle Cioccolato.
