Encompassing some 71,000 acres of soaring mountain peaks (including 7,244-foot Harney Peak), granite spires, open grasslands and undulating foothills, Custer State Park is a haven for budding naturalists. This much storied park is sacred ground for many Great Plains indigenous cultures and there are over 1,500 bison (the largest free-roaming herd in the world), prairie dogs, white-tailed deer and more. Get acquainted with the “begging burros,” donkeys that are dauntless in their pandering for food from tourists.

At the heart of the fabled Black Hills of South Dakota, scenic drives from Custer summon adventure at every turn. 4. Hill City

13.7 miles, 20 minutes • History, Nature

Located near Mount Rushmore, Hill City is more than just a base for regional exploration. Visit the Black Hills Museum of Natural History with its superstar exhibit, Stan, one of the most complete Tyrannosaurus rex skeletons unearthed. Just minutes away lies National Rushmore National Memorial, designed by sculptor Gutzon Borglum. Between 1927 and 1941, the 60-foot-tall faces of presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt were carved from the granite of a Black Hills outcrop.
