1. Bristol

Starting Point • Nature, Outdoor Recreation

Bristol’s star attraction is Newfound Lake, with one of the biggest freshwater swimming beaches in New Hampshire. The lake and surrounding mountains offer take-your-breath-away views. Wellington State Park’s peninsula nature trail provides hikers with access to Goose Pond, Bear Mountain and Welton Falls. Check out Profile Falls on the edge of town. Lake cruises, beaches, designated fishing areas and picnic grounds are all available.

 

2. Holderness

15.2 miles, 26 minutes • Entertainment, Nature, Shopping

One of the most picturesque bodies of water you’ll find in New Hampshire is Squam Lake in Holderness, which was showcased in the movie, “On Golden Pond.” Nestled in the heart of New Hampshire’s Lakes and White Mountains Region, Squam Lake is surrounded by a number of charming New England towns, including Holderness. Visitors there can enjoy the 200-acre Squam Lakes Natural Science Center as well as local theater, music, shopping and more.

 

3. Meredith

9.1 miles, 19 minutes • Entertainment, Nature, Shopping

Nestled between Meredith Bay and Lake Waukewan, Meredith’s menu of activities is as diverse as it comes. From flower festivals signaling the beginning of warm weather to an entire week devoted to classic and custom motorcycles, Meredith aims to dazzle. An annual fine arts and crafts festival brings more than 100 artisans to the area. Of course, the annual Sandwich Fair is hard to beat. Make sure to catch the lakes’ blissful sunsets and brilliant sunrises.

4. Weirs Beach

5.1 miles, 13 minutes • Entertainment, History, Nature, Outdoor Recreation

More than 300 islands call Lake Winnipesaukee’s crystal-clear waters home, and Weirs Beach is a great place to take in the scenery. New Hampshire’s largest lake is framed by three scenic mountain ranges and surrounded by a wooded shoreline. Nearby Mount Major offers perhaps the best viewing spot of this spectacular body of water. Nearby attractions include the Castle in the Clouds, a century-old mountaintop estate that’s open to visitors. Lake cruises are offered daily from Weirs Beach from late May through October.
