While we were exploring southern Louisiana off of I-10, we spent four nights at Poche’s Fish n’ Camp. Located just a few miles east of Lafayette, in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, this RV park was the perfect place to base camp out of and to also spend a few days relaxing. Poche’s has lots of “Louisiana-flavor” and is very unique!
The office is a small wooden cabin that’s decorated with all sorts of fishing paraphernalia, and there is a small store (2 shelving units) inside that features popular products like laundry soap and canned pork and beans.
We were tickled with our site at Poche’s—in all, there are 88 sites that are long and level. Most are concrete pads that will easily accommodate a 40′ class A with a toad parked across the front (there are a few pull-thus, but most are back in). Each site has a fire ring, and the sites have full hookups; both 30 and 50 amp are available. All sites have nice grassy yards, and the grounds are obviously well maintained.
The 85 acre campground is built around several catfish ponds, which the park keeps stocked. If you are camping at Poche’s (they also have 7 cabins available for rent, 2 night min.), you can fish in their ponds for free (outsiders can come in and fish for $10/day); no Louisiana fishing license needed! The park has several fish cleaning stations spread out over the grounds, and you can even fish off the activity center’s covered deck (which is also a nice place to relax in the afternoon heat!). Near the office is a pool (it was closed for the winter during our January visit), public restrooms, and a laundrymat. The laundry room has 4 washers and 4 dryers, and each load/machine is just $1. The activity center is located conveniently in the middle area of the park, and offers a cheerful, bright atmosphere to play cards, visit, do puzzles or go online with the park’s free wifi.
We loved how clean the park was, and the rural location—including the lack of road noise.
But Poche’s isn’t just about a great camping experience, it’s also about the food! Just 2 miles down the road is Poche’s Meat Market. Same family, same town, same quality experience. It’s a favorite of the locals.
The meat market is all about the Poche’s brand of meats, from crawfish boudin (pronounced boo-dan) to seasoned rabbit. You can pick up meat to take home and cook, or you can get it cooked and ready to serve. The meat market even has a Cajun restaurant onsite!
We went out to dinner at Poche’s one night, and enjoyed the unique experience. There is a lunch menu (which the campground office keeps copies of), which is around a dozen different Louisiana specialties, and then there is the dinner menu. The night we were there, the restaurant offered 4 options. There are no printed dinner menus, but the day’s options are written on a white-board between the meat market and the restaurant seating area. When we were there, we were able to choose from fried catfish, fried shrimp, crawfish etouffee (ay-two-fay), and gumbo. For $14, I had the combo, which was the fried catfish and shrimp, and etouffee, served with coleslaw, potato salad, and a roll. Hubby wanted a big plate of crawfish etouffee (I think his was $11). I must say, it was all wonderful, but that fried shrimp was the best I’ve ever had!!! Yum!
Poche’s is a fun taste of Louisiana for all the senses! From a great place to relax in the lawn chair, to a convenient location to park while exploring the Lafayette area, Poche’s is a great choice for a layover, short or extended, on I-10!
