As is typical for me, and I assume most people this time of year, with Thanksgiving right around the corner, I started thinking about all of the things I have to be thankful for. Research has shown that if we regularly become aware of and express our gratitude for all that we have, we tend to be happier and more contented people. Thus this is a good practice to engage in more than just once a year. Also, while my list changes slightly every year, there are some staples that I remain thankful for every time they are in my thoughts.
The most obvious of these are my children. Each a wonderful human being in their own right, I am humbled that I have had but a small part of bringing these beautiful people into this world. Kate is extremely bright, but also a warm human being who can make me laugh in an instant. Ryan, also incredibly bright, is our adventurer; always game for a new hike, camping trip or mountain climb. He pushes us to be more than we would otherwise be and to do more than we would otherwise do. And Meghan, our youngest, is a talented artist, graphic designer and an all around lovely person. I can only hope I am deserving of the role these very special people play in my life.
Another person I am thankful for is my husband, my partner and my best friend, Terry. We were married 24 years ago this past September and I knew when I said “yes” to him that my life would be an adventure. Always ready to take on a new challenge or investigate a new vista, he fulfills me in a way no one else ever has and I cherish every moment we have together. Well, almost every moment; that bike ride down a grassy, rocky hill in the dark with grasshoppers hitting me in the face I could have lived without; but still, it was an adventure!
Further, while we are by no means wealthy, I am very thankful that I have fulfilling work, both teaching and writing, that pays me enough to meet our basic needs, with a bit leftover to enjoy the things we most like to do. And I am thankful that I have the opportunity to enjoy some of the most beautiful areas of this country. This fulfills and sustains me in a way I cannot easily express.
